Find the grotto beneath the large Shar statue, inspect the Broken Effigy and the nearby book One Becomes Many, then decide whether to accept a rat’s treasure-cache bargain or fight the swarm to uncover Lyrthindor.
Where to find the rats
Look for the grotto at the feet of the large Shar statue, near the Silent Library. From the area opposite the library, descend the cragged rocks toward the statue. The in-game map coordinates given in walkthroughs can vary with map context, so use the statue and library as landmarks rather than relying on coordinates alone. BG3 Wiki’s Gauntlet of Shar walkthrough describes the route.
At the ritual site, inspect the Broken Effigy and the nearby book One Becomes Many. Walkthroughs describe the trigger slightly differently: one includes reading the book and lighting candles around the circle, while another describes reading the book and interacting with the effigy. Examine the ritual area and its objects rather than expecting one exact interaction sequence. Attacking a rat elsewhere in the Gauntlet can also cause surviving rats to flee toward this grotto. Choose between the bargain and the fight

The combat includes ordinary rats and variants described as necrotic and soporific or somniatic. Necrotic rats deal necrotic damage; the soporific type can cause sleep when it dies. Be ready for multiple waves before the encounter reaches Lyrthindor. The encounter walkthrough details the variants.

What defeating Lyrthindor does for Yurgir’s contract
Lyrthindor is the last Dark Justiciar Yurgir has not killed. Raphael’s involvement ties the hidden swarm to Yurgir’s contract, which includes the line, “Leave no Justiciar alive to obey.” Defeat Lyrthindor, then return to Yurgir to complete the contract subquest. The last Umbral Gem is near Yurgir’s resting place. The contract quest page explains the follow-up.
The rat encounter can still be started after Yurgir has been killed, so fighting Lyrthindor is not required for every way of resolving the Gauntlet or its larger story. If you have already dealt with Yurgir, check your quest state before choosing a branch; the outcome you want may no longer depend on his contract.

Check Astarion’s story before helping Yurgir
If Astarion previously accepted Raphael’s offer to explain his scars, helping Yurgir by leaving Lyrthindor alive can provoke Astarion’s objection. In that specific story branch, the walkthrough reports a DC 14 Persuasion or Deception check to convince him to stay. This consequence is conditional on Astarion’s earlier agreement with Raphael, not a universal result of taking the rat’s bargain.

Which route should you take?
- Want the treasure cache and a safer route? Accept the bargain and leave the rats alone.
- Want to expose Lyrthindor and finish Yurgir’s contract? Refuse the bargain, fight the waves, defeat Lyrthindor, and return to Yurgir.
- Have an earlier Raphael agreement with Astarion? Factor in the possible companion objection before helping Yurgir.
