The redesigned roles connect those two phases; there is no verified, universally dominant “new meta” formation. Start by deciding what your team should do in each phase, then assign roles that suit your players.
What changed in FM26 tactics?
FM26 separates tactics into In Possession (IP) and Out of Possession (OOP) setups. The IP shape describes how players position and move as attacks develop. The OOP shape describes how they defend, whether that means pressing, holding a block or protecting space. This lets a team change its spacing and responsibilities between phases instead of relying on one nominal formation to express everything. Sports Interactive’s tactical feature overview explains the system and its in-game Visualiser.

Player roles have been redesigned around these phases. Duties have been removed, and the developer says it has reduced the number of hardcoded instructions attached to roles, leaving more room to customize behavior. Player reports show a familiar five-star suitability rating for every role. OOP role suitability takes positional familiarity and the attributes required by that role into account. The official feature article names new IP roles including No-Nonsense Goalkeeper, Ball-Playing Goalkeeper, Overlapping Centre-Back, Playmaking Wing-Back, Advanced Wing-Back, Midfield Playmaker, Wide Central Midfielder, Wide Forward and Channel Forward. Some existing names and functions have also changed, and some roles were removed or reworked; that article does not provide a complete list of OOP roles.
How to think about the two formations
Rather than asking only which formation to select, ask what each player contributes in both phases. Who supplies width in possession? Who protects central space? Who joins the press, drops into the defensive line or stays high as an outlet when the ball is won? Those answers should add up to coherent team shapes, and the assigned roles should make sense for each player’s positional familiarity and attributes.
#1 Best Overall
Use the in-game Tactical Visualiser to inspect positioning and movement as you adjust instructions such as width. It shows instruction areas relevant to the phase and area of the pitch being viewed, helping you check whether the shape on screen matches your intention. The Visualiser illustrates tactical behavior; it is not evidence that a particular setup will win more matches. Sports Interactive’s overview describes the tool.
Examples of dual-phase shapes
These are examples for understanding how shapes can shift, not official recommendations or proof of performance.
3-2-5 in possession into 4-3-3 out of possession
A guide published August 20, 2026, sketches a 3-2-5 IP shape that becomes a 4-3-3 OOP. Its blueprint uses an Overlapping Centre-Back, an inverting Playmaking Wing-Back and a Channel Midfielder. The idea is to create different attacking and defensive structures through role responsibilities. The guide does not establish that this is the best-performing FM26 tactic. See the secondary guide’s dual-phase examples.
3-5-2 into 5-4-1
The same guide sketches a 3-5-2 IP shape shifting into a 5-4-1 OOP as a deeper defensive option. Treat it as another illustration of how the two shapes can differ, not a tested ranking or a guaranteed way to defend effectively. The guide’s diagrams provide the example.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTwo forwards with different defensive jobs
Sports Interactive’s dual-striker example shows how forwards can have distinct OOP responsibilities: a Tracking Centre Forward drops back to support midfield, while a Centre Outlet Forward or Splitting Outlet Forward stays high to lead a counter. The official guide associates tracking duties with Work Rate, Stamina and Aggression, and outlet roles with strengths such as speed and movement. This is a role-based example, not a claim that every two-forward system should use the same pairing. Read the official dual-striker guide.
Rank #2
Is there a new FM26 meta tactic?
The available evidence supports calling FM26’s tactical system phase-based and substantially redesigned; it does not establish one universally dominant formation. Sports Interactive’s feature material describes mechanics rather than comparative rankings. A current third-party tactic library uses labels such as “meta” or “tested,” but the retrieved listings do not provide enough methodology or comparative results to validate a single best tactic. Browse the FM26 Tactics library, keeping in mind that its labels are community claims rather than an established universal ranking.
“Meta” is best understood as a time-sensitive community label. When assessing a specific tactic, check who published it, which patch or game version it applies to, and what evidence supports its claims. Useful comparison questions include:
- How does its IP shape create chances?
- Does its OOP shape stay compact or press aggressively?
- Who provides an outlet during transitions?
- Do the roles fit the squad’s positional familiarity and attributes?
- Which patch or game version was used?
These are practical comparison criteria, not measured results: the cited sources do not provide controlled comparisons across those factors.

A practical starting point for beginners
A secondary beginner guide recommends starting simply and adding separate phase shapes once you understand what each is meant to do. It also cautions against piling on instructions or ignoring role attributes. This is practical advice, not an official rule or a guaranteed route to proficiency. Read the FM26 Tactics beginner guide.
- Define the goal for each phase. Decide how you want to build attacks and what defensive structure you want after losing the ball.
- Set the shapes to support those goals. Identify who should provide width, protect the middle, press, drop back or remain available for a counter.
- Choose roles that fit the players. Use positional familiarity, relevant attributes and the player report’s suitability rating rather than choosing roles by name alone.
- Inspect the result in the Visualiser. Adjust instructions and check the displayed positioning and movement for the phase you are working on.
- Change one thing at a time. Keeping the setup straightforward makes it easier to see which role or instruction is responsible for a behavior you want to change.
Where to check FM26 availability
Sports Interactive’s FM26 page lists platform availability, including FM26 Console on PS5. The Steam product page also summarizes the game’s tactical features.
