Kill the red-eyed Chaos Bug that drops the Sunlight Maggot before Solaire reaches it in Lost Izalith. The most straightforward way is to open the Demon Ruins shortcut by reaching Chaos Servant rank +2, then kill that specific bug before you continue into Lost Izalith.

Why Solaire goes hollow—and what to do

Solaire’s fate hinges on the red-eyed Chaos Bug in the shortcut area. If he reaches the bug before it is killed, he can end up wearing the Sunlight Maggot and turn hostile. Kill the red-eyed bug first; ordinary Chaos Bugs are not the target. The Solaire quest guide identifies the red-eyed bug as the one that drops the Sunlight Maggot and does not respawn.

Standard route: open the shortcut and kill the bug

  1. Find Quelaag’s Sister and join the Chaos Servant covenant.
  2. Offer 30 Humanity to reach Chaos Servant rank +2.
  3. In Demon Ruins, find the corridor before the Demon Firesage area. Go down through the opening and follow the passage to the sealed shortcut door.
  4. Open the door at the required covenant rank, enter the shortcut area, and kill the single red-eyed Chaos Bug—the one that drops the Sunlight Maggot.
  5. Only after the bug is dead, continue into Lost Izalith and progress Solaire’s quest.

The Chaos Servant covenant guide says the shortcut can also be opened from the Lost Izalith side. That may not help if Solaire has already reached the bug, so the safe plan is to deal with it before advancing his encounter.

Can you avoid offering 30 Humanity?

A Steam Community guide reports that you can attack the bug through the closed shortcut door with certain effects, including Poison Mist, Toxic Mist, Dark Fog, or White Dragon Breath: the community guide. This is a workaround, not as simple to verify as opening the door and killing the bug directly. Do not proceed on the assumption that it worked; confirm that the red-eyed bug died.

What happens if you save him?

If the bug is killed in time, the Solaire quest guide describes him appearing later in a saddened state rather than wearing the maggot and attacking. It also says he remains available for the final-boss summon opportunity: Solaire’s quest guide.
