That is the central criticism of the campaign: it moves through striking settings and different kinds of action, yet often confines combat to narrow spaces and prescribed objectives. Operation Ember Strike stands out as a more open alternative, but the reviewer says the campaign does not sustain that approach.
What is Battlefield 6’s campaign?
Battlefield 6 is a full Battlefield release, not a standalone campaign game. Its nine-mission single-player story follows Dagger 13, an elite US Marine Raiders squad, in a fight against Pax Armata, a private military corporation. The game launched on October 10, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC through Steam, the EA app, and Epic Games Store. EA’s launch announcement lists the platforms and mission count.
EA describes a return to one central narrative after Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V used the anthology-style War Stories structure. The campaign travels across three continents, with promoted sequences that include a tank battle near the Pyramids, fighting in Brooklyn, a HALO jump, and an operation at Gibraltar. Those settings give the story a broad frame; the review’s question is whether the missions make that breadth feel like a coherent Battlefield campaign. EA’s campaign preview lays out that design intent.
Why does the campaign feel short on Battlefield identity?
In the Polygon review reproduced by iQOO Community, the reviewer describes the campaign as “a mishmash of locations and mission formats in search of a point.” The criticism is not simply that the game changes setting or mission style. It is that those changes do not add up to a strong, sustained identity: much of the fighting, in the reviewer’s account, takes place in confined or funnelled spaces rather than expansive battlefields where players can shape the approach.

That distinction matters because EA promotes both combined-arms action and squad commands. The company says players can direct squadmates to suppress enemies while repositioning, flanking, sniping, or using grenades. The reviewer’s argument is therefore better understood as a critique of how consistently those tools and opportunities matter, not a claim that squad mechanics or vehicles are missing altogether. EA’s stated ambition, in General Manager Byron Beede’s words, was to deliver “incredible player freedom”; the campaign review questions how often the missions deliver that freedom in practice. EA’s launch announcement contains Beede’s statement.
Does Battlefield 6 offer open-ended missions?
Operation Ember Strike is the standout exception
The reproduced review identifies Operation Ember Strike as the campaign’s clearest stretch of openness. Players can choose the order of objectives, use a drone, and approach targets more freely. That gives the mission a more tactical feel than simply advancing through a fixed sequence of encounters.

The openness does not define the whole campaign
According to the reviewer, the campaign returns to linear objectives after Ember Strike. The result is an uneven relationship between player choice and set-piece action: the game demonstrates a more flexible mission structure, but does not maintain it throughout. That makes the strongest open-ended section feel like an exception rather than the organizing principle of the campaign.

The reviewer whose account was reproduced by iQOO Community estimated roughly 10 hours for their playthrough. That is one reviewer’s estimate, not an official completion-time figure or a guarantee of how long another player will take. EA confirms that the campaign contains nine missions, but does not state a universal runtime. The reproduced review is available on iQOO Community.

Is Battlefield 6’s campaign worth playing for longtime fans?
For fans looking for a single-player campaign with a central story, globe-spanning settings, and cinematic action, Battlefield 6 offers those ingredients. The critical case against it is narrower: the sequence of locations and action styles does not reliably translate into the expansive, player-directed combat that the series’ identity suggests. Operation Ember Strike hints at what that freedom could look like, while much of the rest of the campaign, in the reviewer’s view, keeps players on a more controlled track.
That is an evaluative judgment, not an uncontested verdict on the game or a claim that every Battlefield entry must use the same structure. EA’s move back to a singular narrative is a clear change from Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V’s War Stories. Whether that change succeeds depends on how much a player values narrative continuity and spectacle versus mission openness and battle scale.
