For a first playthrough, choose the Enhanced version on Squire difficulty. Then take time to read the battlefield, experiment with jobs, and revisit your roster as the story adds new recruits. Those choices make the game’s tactical systems easier to learn without locking you into one party or job path.

Which version and difficulty should you choose?

Choose Enhanced if you want the updated presentation and quality-of-life features. It includes improved visuals, voiced dialogue, and refined gameplay. For a first playthrough, Square Enix recommends Squire difficulty as an accessible starting point; select a higher challenge if you would rather make battles more demanding. The available sources do not provide exact tuning differences between difficulty settings. Square Enix’s game page presents Enhanced and Classic as choices within the game, not separate purchases.

Choose Classic if you specifically want the graphics and gameplay of the 1997 version, paired with the War of the Lions translation. It is a deliberate option for players seeking that older experience, rather than the more accessible recommendation for newcomers.

How should you approach battles?

Survey terrain and positioning

Use Tactical View to get a broader look at the battlefield, including terrain and unit placement, before committing to a plan. Positioning matters: consider how the map and objective affect where your units should move and which abilities they can use. There is no universally best formation for every encounter.

Experiment with starting formations

Try changing your starting formation between battles. Square Enix’s beginner guide says formation choices can affect how a fight plays out, so use the map, your available units, and the objective to decide where each character can contribute. Treat each battle as a chance to learn what your lineup needs rather than relying on one fixed arrangement. The publisher’s beginner guide recommends experimenting with formations.

How do jobs and abilities work?

Job development is flexible: a character can change jobs while retaining access to abilities learned in other jobs. The game includes more than 20 jobs and hundreds of abilities, according to Square Enix’s game page. Rather than trying to master one path immediately, explore different jobs and build a useful mix of abilities.

Leveling a variety of jobs also helps unlock advanced jobs. For difficult encounters, think about which abilities from multiple jobs could work together; the publisher’s guide specifically recommends drawing on abilities across jobs for some boss strategies. These systems support experimentation, not one prescribed build: choose combinations that fit the character and the challenges you face.

Should you change your party as the story progresses?

Yes. Story recruits may become some of your strongest combatants, so do not assume the opening roster is permanent. When someone new joins, inspect their role and abilities, then consider how they complement your current party before deciding where to focus your development. Square Enix’s guide notes that powerful combatants can join as the story progresses.
