Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 is built around repeated expeditions: fight through the Dark Citadel, bring back what you earned, improve your hero and town, then head out again. A short or unsuccessful run can still contribute to longer-term progress. For a beginner, the most useful approach is to learn one character’s toolkit, invest in attributes that fit its role, and check town unlocks between runs.
How progression works
Each expedition takes you through randomly generated floors of the Dark Citadel, where you collect equipment and trinkets. Back in town, upgrades and unlocks support later attempts. The game describes this as persistent progression; after conquering the Citadel, New Game+ adds tougher enemies and further progression. See the official Heroes of Hammerwatch 2 site and the Steam store page for the current game overview.

That loop changes how to judge a run: do not treat reaching a new floor as the only worthwhile outcome. When you return, check what your town can now offer and whether acquired gear, blueprints, or trinkets open up a useful next step.
Choose a starting class by play style
Warrior, Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard are the four classes available at the start. Rogue, Warlock, and Sorcerer unlock through gameplay. Each class has three specializations, so the initial choice is a starting point rather than the full roster. Official descriptions do not identify one class as the easiest or best for beginners; choose the actions and combat approach you find most comfortable.

The table is a broad orientation, not a ranking or a complete build prescription. The Steam guide index includes player-created class, stat, and beginner references, but community guides are not official balance statements and can become outdated as skills change.
Spend skill points without locking yourself in
The Training Grounds is where you learn and upgrade skills. A character starts with skill one and one passive free. Skills five and six become available after you choose one of that class’s subclasses at level 10. If you change subclasses, points invested in that subclass’s skills are refunded, so experimenting with a different specialization does not leave those points permanently committed.
For the first few runs, focus on understanding what your current skills do before spreading points around. Detailed skill values and optimal allocations are patch-sensitive; check the current in-game descriptions rather than relying on an old guide’s exact numbers.
Use attributes as a role-based starting point
The Training Grounds’ attribute guidance maps Strength to armor and armor penetration, Dexterity to weapon critical chance and damage, Intelligence to spell critical chance and damage, Focus to mana and regeneration, and Vitality to health and regeneration. It lists Strength as primary for Warrior and Paladin, Dexterity for Ranger and Rogue, and Intelligence for Wizard, Warlock, and Sorcerer.

Use those relationships to guide early choices: a spell-focused Wizard, for example, has Intelligence as its listed primary attribute. They are not universal ratios or exact optimization rules. The available references do not establish current stat caps, damage equations, or a best allocation for every build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make town visits part of the routine
Between expeditions, look for town upgrades that open supporting NPCs and storage. Equipment can be enchanted, blueprints unlock enchants, and trinkets can be permanently upgraded through attunement. Drinks modify runs. These systems give you several ways to turn collected resources and discoveries into support for another attempt, so inspect newly available options rather than heading straight back out.
Consider co-op, but choose it for preference
Online play supports up to four players, according to the official game descriptions. Co-op is an option if you want to play with others; the available descriptions do not establish that it makes the game easier or more efficient for beginners.
Keep patch-sensitive advice in perspective
The official site currently displays announcements for the Epic Weapons update and a 2026 roadmap, and says the Celestial Ruins expansion is out. Those announcements do not, by themselves, establish current class rankings or the exact effects of a patch. For detailed skill values or balance advice, prefer current in-game information and treat older player guides as references to verify, not fixed rules.
