For broad, general-purpose play, the strongest picks in the reviewed ranking are Dicehead, CL4NK, Robinette, and Megachad. If you are learning the game or aiming for a first clear, choose Sir Oofie or Megachad for a more forgiving run. There is no universal best: the right character depends on whether you value predictable scaling, high-variance rewards, long-run gold growth, or survival.
These recommendations reflect an independent editorial tier list reviewed July 28, 2026, using patch baseline v1.0.69—not an official ranking or a guarantee for later patches.
Which Megabonk character should you choose?

The tier guide ranks all 21 characters in its v1.0.69 roster: four S-tier, eight A-tier, six B-tier, and three C-tier. A second independent fan guide using the same baseline also places CL4NK, Dicehead, Megachad, and Robinette in its highest tier. That agreement is useful corroboration, but it is not developer confirmation or a player-performance dataset. See the reviewed tier guide.
Best characters for general-purpose runs
Dicehead: high-variance scaling
Dicehead is a strong choice if you are comfortable with randomness in exchange for powerful scaling. Its Gamba passive triggers when you gain a level and grants a random eligible stat reward. In the reviewed v1.0.69 ranking, rewards use a 75% multiplier with a 6% minimum; Silver Gain and Jump Height are excluded. The guide highlights the potential for substantial crit scaling, but early rewards are unpredictable and the first ten levels can be slow.

CL4NK: predictable crit growth
CL4NK suits players who want a reliable damage-scaling path. Its Crit Happens passive adds 1% Crit Chance per level. The cost is a difficult opening: the ranking calls out very slow movement and early vulnerability, so positioning and getting through the first ten levels matter.
Robinette: long-run gold growth
Robinette is built around accumulating and retaining gold. Its Stonks passive adds 1% Gold Gain per level, while its damage scales with carried gold. That creates a strong long-run ceiling, but the payoff depends on building a gold reserve and keeping it rather than treating the bonus as immediate damage.

Megachad: scaling with a defensive edge
Megachad combines a high general ranking with beginner-friendly survival. The roster directory describes its Flexing passive as granting immunity and stun, plus permanent +2.5% Damage per trigger. Its damage-blocking and survival focus make it a sensible pick when a run’s main challenge is staying alive.
Best characters for a first clear
Sir Oofie: forgiving armor
Sir Oofie is A-tier overall, but the guide specifically recommends it for beginners and first clears. Its Fortified passive adds 1% Armor per level, giving a straightforward defensive path. A lower general-purpose tier than the S-tier group does not make it a poor first-clear choice; it fills a different role. The directory lists Sir Oofie as immediately available.

Megachad: survival plus damage growth
Choose Megachad if you want a beginner-friendly defensive option that also has a place in the top general-purpose tier. Its damage-blocking and survival emphasis can make it more forgiving than a high-risk scaling pick, while Flexing gives it a route to permanent damage growth.
Other characters and what the tier list says
The reviewed guide places Calcium, Roberto, Bush, Amog, Birdo, Ninja, and Tony McZoom in A tier. It places Spaceman, Monke, Ogre, Noelle, Bandit, and Vlad in B tier; Athena, Fox, and Sir Chadwell are in C tier. These are editorial placements for the v1.0.69 baseline, not proof that lower-tier characters cannot clear stages or excel in a particular build. Ninja and Amog are also suggested as possible specialist picks for challenge runs.

How to interpret the rankings and roster count
The tier list is a dated snapshot, reviewed July 28, 2026, against patch baseline v1.0.69. Its ranks should not be assumed to reflect balance changes after that baseline. The official Steam store description calls Megabonk a roguelike survival game about fighting enemies and bosses on randomly generated maps, but it is not a character-balance source. View Megabonk on Steam.
There is also a roster-count discrepancy: Megabonk.org’s reviewed directory lists 21 playable characters, while the Steam store description says 20. Those figures come from different publishers; the Steam number appears to be older listing copy rather than a reconciliation of the later reviewed roster. See the character directory.
