Nintendo has brought the Virtual Boy’s games back as a Nintendo Classics library for Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch—not as a newly manufactured standalone console. The library launched on February 17, 2026, and access requires a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership plus one of Nintendo’s two physical Virtual Boy accessories.
What returned—and what you need to play
Virtual Boy – Nintendo Classics is a downloadable library of games, not a new version of the original Virtual Boy hardware. Nintendo says the software reproduces the original games for Switch 2 and Switch, with some differences in performance and presentation. The accessory recreates the look and experience, but Nintendo says it is not a reproduction of the original hardware. Nintendo UK’s software listing explains the software caveat.
To play, you need a Nintendo Account, an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership, and one of the two Virtual Boy accessories. A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership without Expansion Pack does not provide access. Nintendo’s U.S. product page and support FAQ set out these requirements.
Which Switch systems work?
Nintendo lists Switch 2, standard Switch, and Switch OLED as compatible with the accessories. Switch Lite is not supported. The games run through the Switch software library, but the physical viewing accessory is part of Nintendo’s stated play requirement.

Choose between the two accessories
Nintendo offers a replica-style accessory and a cardboard model. Both are physical play accessories; neither replaces the Expansion Pack membership required for the library.
| Option | Form and included parts | Compatibility and availability |
|---|---|---|
| Replica-style Virtual Boy accessory | Replica-style viewing unit. Nintendo lists a stand, console attachments, eye shade, and lens cover as included components. See the product page. | Supports Switch 2, Switch, and Switch OLED; not Switch Lite. In the United States and Canada, Nintendo’s current support FAQ says it is sold through Nintendo Store to paid Nintendo Switch Online members. |
| Cardboard model | Cardboard accessory; Nintendo says the package includes only the cardboard model. | Subject to the same system compatibility and regional sales terms described in Nintendo’s accessory FAQ. |
Nintendo says the accessories are not limited-time offers. Sales arrangements and stock can change, so check the regional Nintendo Store for current availability and price before buying. The cited U.S. and Canadian terms should not be assumed to apply in other regions.

What games are in the current catalog?
Nintendo’s U.S. product page listed 16 titles when checked on October 7, 2026. This is the current page lineup, not a claim that all 16 were available at launch; the catalog may change.
- 3-D Tetris
- D-Hopper
- Galactic Pinball
- Golf
- Jack Bros.
- Mario Clash
- Mario’s Tennis
- Red Alarm
- Space Invaders Virtual Collection
- Teleroboxer
- The Mansion of Innsmouth
- V-Tetris
- Vertical Force
- Virtual Bowling
- Virtual Boy Wario Land
- Zero Racers
The collection’s appeal is its unusual mix of genres and its stereoscopic presentation, rather than a single game or one uniform style. Nintendo announced the library as a set of stereoscopic 3D games for Switch 2 and Switch in its February 17, 2026 launch notice.

How much of the original experience is preserved?
The software reproduces original games, but Nintendo explicitly notes that performance and presentation differ in some ways from the original versions. The accessory is intended to reproduce the viewing setup’s look and experience; Nintendo distinguishes that from reproducing the original console hardware. It is therefore best understood as a modern way to access the games, not a guarantee of a bit-for-bit or hardware-identical restoration.

Nintendo UK recommends age 7+ for the app and accessories. Nintendo’s U.S. product page advises consulting a doctor before playing if you have epilepsy or have experienced seizures or other unusual reactions to flashing lights or patterns. Follow the guidance shown for your region and take it seriously before using a stereoscopic display.
