What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no single best multiplayer game for every group. Pick based on the platforms your friends use and the kind of session you want: Brawlhalla is the clearest fit for free cross-platform fighting and local play; Apex Legends is a free-to-play battle royale; Rocket League delivers arcade-style soccer; and Fortnite offers several different game experiences. These are evidence-backed starting points, not a hands-on-tested or objective ranking.
Which multiplayer game fits your group?
Before choosing, check two things: whether everyone can play on the platforms available to your group, and whether you want the same kind of multiplayer session. A game being available on several systems does not, by itself, confirm that players on those systems can join the same match.

- For free cross-platform fighting and party play: start with Brawlhalla.
- For a battle royale: consider Apex Legends, but verify cross-play for your group rather than assuming it from its platform listings.
- For arcade-style sports matches: look at Rocket League and confirm platform compatibility.
- For a choice of different experiences: explore Fortnite’s listed modes, checking the rules for the specific experience you want.
“Free to play” describes access to the base game; it does not establish that every optional purchase or mode is free. Regional storefront terms and the current scope of in-game purchases are not established here.
Multiplayer games to consider
| Game | Best fit | Platform and play details | Free to start? |

| Apex Legends | Battle royale | EA describes classic 60-person Battle Royale matches. Its page lists EA app, Steam, Epic Games Store, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch download routes; the listings alone do not establish cross-play. Official Apex Legends page | Yes; EA lists it as free to play. Optional purchase details and regional terms are not stated on the cited pages. |
| Rocket League | Arcade-style competitive sports | The official site describes a hybrid of arcade-style soccer and vehicular mayhem. The page does not establish that every mode has the same player capacity or cross-play conditions. Official Fortnite site | Not stated on the cited page. |
Why Brawlhalla is the easiest fit to verify
Brawlhalla has unusually specific official information for groups deciding whether they can play together: the developer names supported platforms, confirms full cross-play, and says matches support up to eight people locally or online. That makes it the strongest starting point here for a group that needs both couch play and online options.

What to verify before inviting everyone
- Write down each player’s platform. Include the exact console generation or device where relevant.
- Confirm cross-play for the game and mode. Use the official game page or current in-game settings; do not infer it merely because the game appears in several storefronts.
- Check the mode and group size. A capacity confirmed for one mode should not be assumed for every mode in a game with multiple experiences.
- Decide between local and online play. If meeting in person, confirm the game supports the local setup you want; if playing remotely, check online access and any account requirements on the current official page.
- Check current availability in your region. Storefront routes and game features can change, so consult the publisher’s current listing for your system.
How to choose
If certainty about mixed-platform play matters most, Brawlhalla is the clearest recommendation because its official page explicitly documents cross-play and local or online play for up to eight people. Choose Apex Legends for its battle royale format, Rocket League for arcade sports, or Fortnite when your group wants to choose among different listed experiences—but verify the particular platform pairing and mode first. This selection is not a ranking by popularity or player population; no independent live-population figures or hands-on performance tests are established here.
