Slay the Spire 2 and Bungie’s Marathon launched on March 5, 2026. After Slay the Spire 2 recorded the higher launch-day peak on Steam, developer Mega Crit congratulated Marathon’s team and joked that players shouldn’t overlook “small indie passion projects like this just because Slay the Spire 2 is out.” Mega Crit later said the post was sarcastic; it was a teasing launch-day comparison, not evidence of a serious feud.
What did Mega Crit post about Marathon?
Mega Crit’s message congratulated Marathon’s team, then turned the simultaneous launches into a joke: “Don’t let small indie passion projects like this pass you by just because Slay the Spire 2 is out.” The line playfully cast the large Bungie shooter as a small indie project while pointing to the attention Slay the Spire 2 was drawing. Windows Central reported the post and the studio’s same-day clarification on March 5, 2026.
Did Slay the Spire 2 pass Marathon in concurrent players?
On Steam, yes: Windows Central reported launch-day peaks of 177,362 concurrent players for Slay the Spire 2 and 86,718 for Marathon, citing Steam charts. These are peak numbers of people playing at the same time on Steam—not sales, unique players, or total audiences across platforms.
| Game | Launch-day Steam peak | Context |
|---|---|---|
| Slay the Spire 2 | 177,362 concurrent players | Steam charts, as reported by Windows Central on March 5, 2026. |
| Marathon | 86,718 concurrent players | Steam charts, as reported by Windows Central on March 5, 2026. Marathon also launched on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5. |
Because Marathon was available on consoles as well as PC, the Steam comparison does not show which game had more players overall. It says only that Slay the Spire 2 had the higher reported Steam peak that day.

How did Mega Crit and Casey Yano clarify the joke?
Mega Crit followed up by saying “it wasn’t supposed to be shade, we were being sarcastic 😭 Did not know we’d blow up quite to the degree that we did,” as quoted by Windows Central. The clarification frames the post as a joke about an unexpectedly large response, rather than a deliberate attack on Bungie.
Mega Crit co-founder Casey Yano also acknowledged how the message could read. PC Gamer reported that he wrote, “This seems a bit meaner than it was intended…” and added, “To be fair I didn’t think we’d actually pass Marathon in concurrent users.” PC Gamer’s March 8, 2026 report also described a later SteamDB snapshot: about 566,000 concurrent players for Slay the Spire 2 and about 47,000 for Marathon at the time of writing. Those are later Steam observations, not launch-day peaks or cross-platform totals.

How do the later Steam numbers compare?
Player counts change, so later snapshots should not be mixed with March 5 launch-day figures. SteamCharts recorded Slay the Spire 2’s Steam all-time peak as 574,638; its page also showed an 86,665 24-hour peak and 42,609 players at 2026-10-07T20:01:05Z. These are Steam tracking figures from the page accessed October 7, 2026, not measures of the game’s entire audience.
The later numbers give a sense of how Slay the Spire 2’s Steam activity developed, but they do not change what the original joke compared: reported concurrent users on Steam around two launches on the same date.
