For a flexible Spellsword in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, build around Blade, Destruction, Restoration, and Alteration, then add Block and either Heavy Armor or Light Armor. This custom class balances sword damage, ranged magic, defense, and healing; it is a practical starting point, not a mathematically proven universal best. Bethesda describes swordcraft and magic as complementary parts of the game, but its official pages do not rank one Spellsword setup above another.
Recommended Spellsword skills
Choose skills that let you handle a fight at different ranges and preserve options when Magicka runs low. Bethesda’s Oblivion Remastered skill overview describes the core skills and their roles.
| Skill | Role in the build |
|---|---|
| Blade | Your main weapon skill for swords and daggers. |
| Destruction | Offensive magic, including fire, frost, and shock; use it at range or when you need to manage an approach. |
| Restoration | Support magic that gives you a way to sustain yourself instead of spending every encounter’s Magicka on damage. |
| Alteration | Defensive and utility magic, including Shield effects. |
| Block | Lets you parry with a shield or weapon and reduce damage when a block succeeds. |
| Heavy Armor or Light Armor | Choose the armor skill that best suits your preferred protection, mobility, and equipment weight. Bethesda categorizes Heavy Armor as a combat skill and Light Armor as a stealth skill. |
Pick your weapon setup
A one-handed blade and shield is the straightforward defensive option: it pairs naturally with Block and keeps your build’s focus on surviving close combat while using magic when useful. A two-handed weapon is an alternative if you prefer committing to weapon reach and damage over shield defense. The detail that shields cannot be used with two-handed weapons comes from the 2006 PC manual for the original game, not remaster-specific documentation, so confirm the exact behavior in-game.
Choose attributes for the job
Spread attribute investment across the build’s three main demands: Strength for melee output, Intelligence for Magicka capacity, and Endurance for health. Willpower is also valuable for Magicka regeneration. The best balance depends on whether you want your character to lean toward melee, spellcasting, or durability; the official sources do not establish a single required allocation.

Bethesda’s leveling guide says each level grants 12 Virtue Points. You can assign no more than 5 to one attribute, and you can distribute points across up to 3 attributes per level. Use those points to shore up whichever part of the build is falling behind rather than pouring every increase into one strength.
Level without leaving combat behind
Skills improve through use, and Major Skills contribute to character-level progress faster than Minor Skills. When the bronze level-up notification appears, sleep to complete the level. Bethesda notes that enemies scale with your level, so character levels gained mainly from easy utility skills can leave your combat ability behind.

- Use Blade regularly while developing your magic and defensive skills; do not let incidental utility use become the main driver of your character levels.
- Cast spells when you have Magicka available as part of normal play. Bethesda says using magic raises magic skills, but this build does not require grinding or exploits.
- When the level-up prompt appears, sleep to finish leveling, then allocate your Virtue Points to the attributes you need.
These leveling and skill-use details are covered in Bethesda’s gameplay and leveling guidance and beginner tips.
Make the build fit your play style
- More melee: Favor Strength and keep Blade at the center of your combat development.
- More spellcasting: Give Intelligence priority for a larger Magicka pool, and use Destruction alongside support magic.
- More durability: Develop Endurance, Block, and your chosen armor skill.
- More mobility or less weight: Compare Heavy and Light Armor in play. Bethesda notes that armor perks can reduce worn armor weight; carrying too much prevents fast travel.
- More defense or two-handed offense: Use a shield and Block for a defensive approach, or choose a two-handed weapon if you are willing to give up shield defense. Verify the remaster’s exact equipment behavior in-game.
There is no established official ranking for the best race, birthsign, blade, or armor set for a Spellsword. Treat those as personal choices, and judge them by whether they support the balance of melee, Magicka, and survivability you want.

Why this is a strong starting build, not a universal optimum
Bethesda’s official material explains the relevant skills and leveling mechanics, but does not publish a best-build ranking or comparative performance data for races, birthsigns, gear, or custom classes. The configuration here applies those documented roles to the sword-and-magic play style; it is a flexible recommendation, not a tested claim that it outperforms every alternative.
Bethesda’s beginner guide, published April 22, 2025, quotes Design Director Al Nanes advising players to explore, talk to people, and follow discoveries that take the story in a new direction. That is general play advice rather than a Spellsword mechanic, but it suits a build designed to adapt as you encounter the game’s different challenges.
