2025 is over, so its remakes and remasters are no longer “coming.” Two notable releases illustrate how different an update can be: Konami presented METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER as a remake, while Bethesda Game Studios described The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered as a remaster. This is a selected, not exhaustive, look at those releases; the available evidence does not establish an objective ranking of the year’s “best.”
How to read this selection
The two games below are included because each revisits a major earlier title, and together they show distinct approaches to updating one. The comparison focuses on release date and platforms, how the publisher labels the project, what it changes, and whether it includes previously released expansions. It is not a complete calendar of 2025 releases.
METAL GEAR SOLID Δ: SNAKE EATER
Release and platforms
Konami announced a release date of August 28, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. The company’s release announcement and product page identify it as a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2004.
What kind of update it is
Konami’s remake label makes this the clearer full-remake example in this selection. The cited official material establishes the relationship to the 2004 game, but does not provide a detailed, system-by-system account of gameplay changes or identify included expansions. Those specifics should not be inferred from the word “remake” alone.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
Release and availability
Bethesda Game Studios’ launch post is dated April 22, 2025. Xbox Wire lists availability on Xbox Series X|S, PC, cloud, and PlayStation 5, and says it was available day one with Game Pass. See the Bethesda launch post and Xbox Wire’s launch coverage.
Why Bethesda calls it a remaster
Bethesda described the project as a remaster rather than a remake: “We never wanted to remake it – but remaster it – where the original game was there as you remember playing it, but seen through today’s technology.” The statement appears in the studio’s April 22, 2025 launch post. That distinction reflects Bethesda’s stated intent; the label alone does not mean every part of the original is unchanged.

Visual, system, and content updates
Xbox Wire says the remaster uses Unreal Engine 5 for its visual treatment and updates the interface and gameplay systems. It also includes the previously released Knights of the Nine and Shivering Isles expansions. These changes make it a broader presentation and systems update while preserving the original game as its foundation.

What this says about the “best” 2025 releases
These examples are useful for comparing two different update strategies, but they cannot establish which games were objectively the best or represent every remake and remaster released during 2025. A fuller ranking would require a verified year-wide slate and a consistent basis for judging quality; the official sources cited here do not settle either question.
