For a relaxed, farm-focused start, choose Cook. If you plan to master every profession and want to collect temple artifacts on your first visits, choose Archaeologist first, then Cook. Neither is a universal winner: Luma Island’s eight professions support different activities, and there is no published, reproducible comparison showing which earns the most Coins or levels fastest.
Which profession should you choose first?
Your first profession is free, and you are not locked out of the others. Choose the activity you want to build your early game around; later profession permits cost more. The recommendations below are playstyle advice from Luma Island Guide, not a tested ranking of all eight professions.

Choose Cook for a relaxed farm-first start
Cook is the clearest beginner choice if you want to grow crops, raise animals, and develop your farm. It ties early progression to the farming loop rather than asking you to make temples or precision platforming your main focus.
Choose Archaeologist for a completionist run
If your goal is to master every profession, Luma Island Guide recommends starting as an Archaeologist and taking Cook afterward. The guide’s reasoning is that collecting Ancient Artifacts during your initial temple visits can spare you from revisiting completed temples later. Some Archaeologist quests call for precise action-platforming, however, which may not suit a casual start.

Choose around the activity you enjoy
- Fisherman: A fit if you want to spend time with the game’s fishing system.
- Shipwright: Consider it if pirate-related shipbuilding and quest progress appeal to you.
- Treasure Hunter: The guide describes this as one of the easier professions to master and says crafting its items costs no money; treat that as the guide’s assessment, not a comparative test.
- Brewer: A farm-linked option that uses homegrown ingredients.
- Blacksmith or Jewelrycrafter: Consider these if working with materials from caves and other resource-gathering loops sounds appealing.
These are broad playstyle descriptions, not claims that the professions are equally easy, profitable, or quick. The developer describes Luma Island as a game built around activities including farming, fishing, exploration, temples, and treasure, with different difficulty modes and room to progress at your own pace. Bram Eisenhardt, Lead Developer at Feel Free Games, wrote in the PlayStation Blog announcement on 24 September 2026: “Different difficulty modes and plenty of ways to play mean everyone can explore the island at their own pace.”
What are the eight professions?
The current roster is Cook, Brewer, Shipwright, Treasure Hunter, Blacksmith, Fisherman, Jewelrycrafter, and Archaeologist. The developer’s current presskit and September 2026 PlayStation Blog post both identify eight professions. An older official wiki result lists seven and omits Shipwright, so that count is outdated.
How much do profession permits cost?
According to Luma Island Guide’s professions page, updated 4 August 2026, profession permits are purchased at Town Hall for the following amounts:

The first profession is also described as free in an official wiki quest search result. The later amounts above come from the updated guide; the wiki result’s older profession count conflicts with current developer sources.
Can you change your mind later?
You can take more than one profession, so choosing your first does not permanently exclude the rest. The cost increases as you unlock additional professions, making the free first choice the best opportunity to match your opening to the loop you most want to play. The developer presents the game as allowing players to explore and progress at their own pace, rather than treating the first profession as a gate to the whole game.

No reliable comparison establishes a universal winner for income or leveling speed. The guide offers practical recommendations, but not a reproducible test across all eight professions. Pick Cook for farm-centered play, Archaeologist for the guide’s completionist route, or another profession that puts your preferred activity first; do not choose based on an unsupported promise of maximum earnings or fastest progress.

Does the game’s difficulty mode change the recommendation?
Luma Island is a 1–4-player online co-op exploration, farming, and crafting game. Its developer describes Cozy Mode as having no combat unless the player chooses it, while Adventure and Hero modes offer more challenge. These modes can shape the feel of the overall game, but the available profession advice does not identify a different best first profession for each mode.
The game is available on PC via Steam, according to the Feel Free Games presskit. The same presskit lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S as coming soon, while the developer announced PS5 on 24 September 2026; check current platform listings for availability before buying.
