To get better at combat in Hollow Knight: Silksong, treat silk as a shared resource for healing and abilities, use Bind only when you have a safe opening, and choose a Crest and tools that suit the enemy and your preferred spacing. There is no single setup that is best for every fight: watch an enemy’s pattern, then adjust your timing, range, or equipment when your current approach is not working.
How silk, attacks, and Bind work together
Team Cherry describes Hornet’s silk and life-force as inseparably connected. In practice, silk supports both Bind, which heals, and Silk Skills, so spending it on one option means it is unavailable for the other. Attacking enemies is the main way to build silk, according to a community combat reference; the HUD shows when enough is available for an action. Exact thresholds are patch-sensitive, so focus on the meter rather than relying on an old number.
At the start of the game, one Bind heals three masks and consumes the full starting spool, according to Team Cherry’s official systems update. The developer also warns that getting hit during Bind wastes both the heal and the silk. Bind can be used in midair, but that does not make it safe during an incoming attack.
Choose between healing and a Silk Skill
The following is a practical decision rule, not an official priority system: spend silk on Bind when you urgently need health and can identify a safe opening. Use a Silk Skill when the damage or control it offers is more likely to prevent danger or create a worthwhile opening. If an enemy is actively attacking, avoid beginning Bind simply because the meter is full.

Find a safe opening before healing
Before committing to repeated attacks—or trying to heal—watch at least one attack cycle. Note whether the enemy’s moves cover the ground, the air, or both, and look for a recovery moment after an attack. That observation helps you decide when to strike, reposition, or Bind; it is a practice method, not a guarantee that every enemy follows the same rhythm.
- Watch the pattern. Identify the attack’s range and where Hornet can stand or move to avoid it.
- Attack during a genuine opening. Use those moments to deal damage and build silk rather than trading hits.
- Check the threat before Binding. Wait until the current attack has ended and the enemy is unlikely to interrupt you during the heal.
- Use midair Bind only when it is safe. The option exists, but an airborne position is not protection from an attack.
Choose a Crest for the fight and your play style
Crests affect how Hornet attacks and can change Bind’s effect. The PlayStation overview describes the Wanderer Crest as fast with shorter reach, while the Beast Crest gives wider, claw-like attacks. The Reaper Crest increases silk generation from attacks for a short time after Bind. These differences suggest useful trade-offs, not a universal ranking.

- The Infect Edition includes the full game, an exclusive sleeve and 3 character cards
- A complete remake (visuals, sound, gameplay mechanics) of the iconic arcade shooter game released in 1998
- Play alone or with a partner, using the joysticks and enjoy optimised handling for more precise aiming
- Non-stop action to relive the thrill of arcade games
- Several routes to explore and several endings to be discovered depending on how you play (solo or co-op mode, number of continues, etc.)
When comparing Crests, consider the traits that matter to the fight and to your own habits:
- Reach: A shorter-range attack may require closer timing; a different reach can make it easier to connect while maintaining your preferred distance.
- Speed and rhythm: Choose an attack cadence that lets you strike during the openings you can reliably recognize.
- Coverage: Wider attacks may suit situations where an enemy or threat occupies more space, but that alone does not establish a best choice for a particular boss.
- Tool layout: Compare the tools each Crest lets you carry or use; the available layout can change which options fit your plan.
- Bind effect: Factor in how a Crest changes Bind, especially if your approach depends on healing or on what happens after you heal.
If your attacks repeatedly fall short, feel too slow, or do not cover the space you need, try a different Crest as a diagnostic. Change one variable at a time—such as Crest, spacing, or timing—so you can tell what improved the fight.

Use tools and traps as alternatives to direct attacks
Hornet can unlock tools including thread traps and throwing knives, alongside other equipment, according to the PlayStation overview. Traps can trigger when an enemy walks into them or hits them with an object. These options let you vary your approach, but that broad description does not establish that every tool works on every boss.
Try tools against ordinary enemies as they become available, then consider testing them in a difficult encounter. A trap or projectile may fit a fight better than repeated close-range attacks, but the useful matchup depends on the enemy. If a tool does not help, return to observing the attack pattern and adjust your spacing or timing rather than assuming the equipment is universally effective.

Change your approach when a fight stalls
Team Cherry’s game page describes more than 200 foes, so it is sensible to expect varied encounters rather than one combat routine that solves everything. When the same approach keeps failing, make a deliberate adjustment instead of repeating it unchanged:
- If attacks miss, reassess your distance and the Crest’s reach.
- If you are interrupted while healing, wait for a clearer recovery window.
- If you struggle to connect safely, try a different attack rhythm or a tool that changes how you engage.
- If silk is repeatedly unavailable when you need it, review how often you spend it on Skills versus saving it for a safe Bind.
Keep each attempt focused on one change. That makes it easier to judge whether the adjustment helped, without mistaking a different timing or position for a better build.
