There is no single best weapon for every Rogue Trader character or encounter. The strongest choice depends on who can equip it, what the weapon needs to do, and whether its special effect suits the target. Compare weapons by role—precision, cover and dodge, knockback, sustained fire, or armour and status interactions—instead of treating one type as a universal winner.
Start with character fit and equipment rules
Weapons are divided into melee and ranged families, and can be one- or two-handed. Characters can switch between two weapon sets during combat; a shield takes up a weapon slot in each set, except when the character has the Shield Mastery exception. Those limits matter when weighing a weapon’s damage against the flexibility of the whole loadout. The community weapon list summarizes weapon categories and equipment rules.

Proficiency is another gate. Las, Solid Projectile, and Exotic ranged weapons are listed as not requiring weapon proficiency talents; other ranged families generally do, though some companions start with proficiencies. Check the individual character’s talents and restrictions before planning around a weapon. Heavy weapons can add a Strength requirement as well as proficiency, so a high-stat weapon may demand a build investment that is not worthwhile for every character.
Choose by the job the weapon needs to do
Against cover or high-dodge targets: consider las weapons
The community wiki describes laser weapons as effective against targets in cover and targets with high dodge. That is a family-level tactical advantage, not proof that every las weapon outperforms every alternative. The Las Weapons listing also says sniper rifles deal 50% more critical damage. Its Exitus Long-Las entry lists a 25% hit-chance bonus and an Iconoclast — Zealot condition for an additional damage bonus. Those are listed item properties; whether they are useful depends on the character and the condition being met.

For knockback and overpenetration: consider solid projectiles
The weapon list describes shotguns as knocking enemies back when fired at effective range, while solid projectile weapons are listed as having increased overpenetration. That makes them worth comparing when control or shots passing through targets matter more than a simple single-target damage comparison. The Adeptus Arbites Foehammer illustrates the trade-offs: its listing identifies it as a single-handed shotgun pistol with 12–20 damage, 10 range, and one rate of fire. These are community-wiki item values, not an independent performance test; check the installed game for current values. See the Shotguns listing.
For sustained heavy fire: weigh output against requirements
The Calibrated Heavy Stubber is listed with 3–6 damage, range 5, rate of fire 12, recoil 50, and 156 ammunition. It is a heavy weapon with a minimum Strength of 60. That combination makes it a high-rate-of-fire option to assess for a character who meets its restrictions and can use its short listed range; it does not establish the stubber as the best weapon for every build. Several other heavy weapons also require at least 60 Strength and may require proficiency. The Heavy Weapons listing gives item-level details.

For armour or status synergies: read the unique effect
Unique melee effects can matter more than the weapon family label. Restless Absolution is listed at 33–49 damage and adds 75% damage when an attack fully negates the target’s armour. Tormentor of the Chastened is listed at 30–45 damage and gains one point of base damage per common negative effect and trauma on its target. The first rewards an armour interaction; the second scales with conditions already affecting the opponent. Consider how often the trigger will apply in the encounters and build you expect to use. The Melee Weapons listing records these properties.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical way to compare two weapons
- Confirm the character can equip it. Check proficiency, Strength, companion talents, and whether using the weapon would require a build detour.
- Name the tactical job. Decide whether you need precision, burst or area pressure, knockback, or an interaction with cover, dodge, armour, or status effects.
- Account for the whole weapon set. Check one- or two-handed use, heavy status, range, rate of fire, and whether the weapon fits alongside the character’s other equipment.
- Check the trigger, not just the headline effect. A unique bonus is valuable only when the target condition occurs often enough for that character and encounter.
- Verify the current item card. Community wiki values and availability can change with patches; compare the in-game listing before committing to an endgame choice.
How current are the listed weapon details?
The linked item pages belong to an unofficial, community-maintained wiki that says it is still updating DLC and patch information. Its landing page reported game version 1.6.0, released June 11, 2026, at the time reflected in that reference. Treat the cited damage, range, ammunition, and effect details as version-sensitive rather than a definitive endgame tier list. Check the installed game or current patch notes for the version you play. Owlcat’s beta guide offers background on equipment and combat stats, but it is beta-era material and should not override current item data.
