Baldur’s Gate 3: best all-round starting point
Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 is an RPG set in the Dungeons & Dragons world. It combines custom character creation and party-based adventuring with turn-based combat, dialogue and decisions that can change how the story unfolds. That mix makes it a particularly good fit if you want a role-playing game where building a character and choosing how to respond matter as much as fighting.

GameSpot describes the game as a “100-plus-hour adventure.” That is the publication’s characterization of its scope, not an official minimum or a guaranteed completion time; time spent will depend on how you play and what you choose to explore. GameSpot’s 2026 list
New to the series?
You do not need to have played earlier Baldur’s Gate games to start this one, according to PC Gamer. Its Dungeons & Dragons setting provides context, but prior series knowledge is not a prerequisite.
Recent official support
Larian says Patch 8, released April 15, 2025, added cross-play, 12 subclasses, photo mode and an update to the modding toolkit. The developer’s official page also lists a March 26, 2026 notice for Hotfix #36, mentioning performance issues and crashes introduced by a preceding update. Check Larian’s update page for the latest support information rather than assuming that notice is still the newest status.

Elden Ring for demanding action
Pick Elden Ring if you want exploration alongside difficult action combat and boss encounters. Its appeal in this shortlist is the contrast with Baldur’s Gate 3: combat is action-focused rather than turn-based, and discovery across a large world is central to the experience. GameSpot’s 2026 list
