Next, test HDMI directly to the TV, check headset or optical settings if you use those routes, and update the console and connected equipment. These checks can help isolate a setup issue before you seek repair.
Start with the TV or audio device
Check that your TV, receiver, sound bar, or speakers are powered on, unmuted, and set to a usable volume. If your setup requires choosing a TV input, make sure the correct one is selected. PlayStation Support lists these as initial checks for a PS4 with no audio.
Check the audio route that matches your setup
The right PS4 setting depends on whether sound should come through HDMI, optical audio, or a headset. Avoid changing settings for a route you are not using.
HDMI to a TV or receiver
On the PS4, open Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings and verify that audio is set to the HDMI-connected device. For ordinary HDMI use, PlayStation says output is automatically optimized for the connected TV or home theater system.

Optical audio
If your console and audio system are connected by an optical cable, go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port > DIGITAL OUT (OPTICAL). This option applies only to PS4 models with an optical output: CUH-2000 series consoles do not have an optical digital output terminal. Also check that your audio equipment supports the selected format; PlayStation cautions that incompatible speakers might be damaged.
Headphones
Open Settings > Devices > Audio Devices > Output to Headphones. The default is Chat Audio, so a headset may carry chat without game and system audio. If you want all audio in a compatible headset, choose an all-audio option if one is available.

Isolate the HDMI cable and other equipment
A faulty HDMI cable can cause audio problems. Try a different known-good compatible cable before buying a replacement. To test whether an intermediary is involved, connect the PS4 directly to the TV or display and temporarily remove a sound bar, receiver, capture device, or other equipment from the signal path. If sound returns, reconnect devices one at a time to identify where the problem appears.
PlayStation’s direct-connection advice is a diagnostic step; it does not mean that receivers, sound bars, or capture devices are inherently incompatible. If you use a device-specific audio or signal setting, check that device’s manual.

Check format settings only when compatibility may be involved
Under Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings, Audio Format (Priority) defaults to Linear PCM. PlayStation identifies the setting and default, but does not describe changing it as a universal fix. Consider it when your connected audio equipment may not support the current format, and consult the device manufacturer’s guidance before changing settings.
HDCP and capture-device setups
HDCP is enabled by default for HDMI. PlayStation says an HDMI-connected device that is incompatible with HDCP can prevent both video and audio output. Disabling HDCP is a specialized gameplay-only option, not a first step for ordinary missing sound: Blu-ray and DVD playback, as well as DRM-protected streaming, requires HDCP. Changing the setting closes open applications.

Update the PS4 and connected equipment
Install available PS4 system software updates, and check for current firmware for the TV or audio device. For instructions specific to a receiver, sound bar, or display, use its manufacturer’s manual. PlayStation includes system and device updates among its recommended checks for picture and sound problems.
When to ask PlayStation for repair help
If sound remains missing after checking the listening device, output route, cable, intermediary equipment, and updates, use PlayStation’s PS4 picture and sound troubleshooting page to reach its Repairs diagnostic tool. No sound by itself does not establish that the HDMI port or another internal component has failed.
