The Minecraft “Outdated client” error usually means the game version or edition on your device is incompatible with the world, Realm, or server you’re trying to join. Check that both sides use a compatible edition and matching game versions, then update Minecraft through the official platform for your device. An outdated version is a common cause of multiplayer connection problems, according to Minecraft Help.
Why does Minecraft say my client is outdated?
“Client” means the copy of Minecraft running on your device. The message is a reason to check whether that copy is compatible with the world or server; it does not, by itself, show that your device is faulty.

Minecraft multiplayer requires compatible editions and matching game versions. There are two checks to make:
- Edition: Are you and the host using Java Edition or Bedrock Edition?
- Version: Is your installed game version compatible with the version the world or server is running?
Minecraft Help says Bedrock Edition is required to join a Bedrock world, server, Realm, or LAN game. Owning Minecraft on two devices does not guarantee that those copies can join each other. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.

How to fix the outdated client error
- Confirm the edition. Check whether you’re playing Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, and ask the host which edition the target world or server uses. Java and Bedrock are separate editions; the official download page describes Java Edition as PC-only. If the editions do not match the destination, use a compatible edition rather than repeatedly updating the wrong one.
- Ask which game version the host is running. Compare it with the version selected or installed on your device. Follow the host’s stated compatibility instead of relying on an old forum post: Minecraft’s requirement is matching game versions.
- Update Minecraft through your device’s platform. Use that platform’s update settings; the exact controls vary by device. On PC, the official Minecraft Launcher provides access to game versions and updates.
- Update the Launcher if it appears stale. Minecraft’s download page says the Launcher should automatically update when started. If it does not on Windows, the stated remedy is to update it through the Windows Store Library.
- Relaunch and try joining again. After the update completes, restart or relaunch Minecraft and retry the connection. This is a sensible check, but relaunching alone is not a guaranteed fix for every connection problem.
- If it still fails, contact the host or server owner. Ask them to verify the server or world’s edition and version against your client. The host may need to check their side if your client is already current.
Update steps by edition and platform
Bedrock Edition
For a Bedrock world, Realm, server, or LAN game, make sure every player is using Bedrock Edition and check for updates through the update controls on each player’s platform. The steps differ by device, so use its official platform settings rather than downloading an update from an unofficial site.
Java Edition on PC
Open the official Minecraft Launcher and select the intended Java game version. Update or launch that version through the Launcher, then compare it with the version the server owner says the server supports. Java’s PC-only availability is described on the official Minecraft download page.

If you own the server or host the world
Check that the server software and connecting clients use compatible editions and versions. Minecraft provides separate Java and Bedrock server software downloads, but its official support pages do not provide a full server-side repair checklist or prescribe a migration method.
- Confirm which edition the server or world uses.
- Check the server’s release or intended compatibility against the players’ client versions.
- Tell players which edition and version they should use.
Do not change server files or install compatibility plugins based only on this error. The official compatibility guidance establishes what needs to match, but it does not endorse particular third-party plugins.

What not to do
- Do not install an unofficial game update. Use the update route provided by your platform or the official Minecraft Launcher.
- Do not assume the problem requires new hardware or PC “optimizer” software. The documented first checks are edition and game-version compatibility.
- Do not keep updating your client without checking what the destination supports. The host’s stated edition and version are the useful comparison.
