Its forging and weighty combat give it a distinct identity, but PC Gamer’s review found that repetitive encounters and a campaign that overstays its welcome blunt the appeal. It is best suited to players who enjoy methodical melee systems and are willing to tolerate uneven pacing.
What is Blades of Fire?
Developed by MercurySteam and published by 505 Games, Blades of Fire is a dark fantasy action-adventure. You play Aran de Lira, a warrior in a world where Queen Nerea’s spell turns steel to stone. Aran travels with Adso, a scholarly companion who contributes lore and knowledge about enemies.
The game’s central idea is that weapons are not just interchangeable loot: you forge them, choose their family and materials, then use their traits to meet the demands of a fight. That crafting-and-combat connection is the strongest reason to consider the game.
How does forging and combat work?
Build a weapon for the job
According to 505 Games’ official description, the forge includes seven weapon families and more than 30 Forge Scrolls. Weapon family and materials shape traits such as weight, length, durability, penetration, and edge quality. The game asks you to choose a weapon with a particular enemy or situation in mind, rather than relying on one universal solution.

Choose attacks with intent
Combat centers on directional attacks aimed at specific enemy body parts, with slashing, stabbing, or blunt approaches available. The PlayStation game page describes the system as “deliberate and unforgiving,” highlighting patience, positioning, timing, spacing, stamina, and defense. That is official promotional framing, but it captures the intended tempo: attacks are commitments, not rapid button presses.
PC Gamer reviewer Kerry Brunskill found the attacks weighty and the ability to inspect enemy vulnerabilities satisfying. The review also judged many regular enemies to offer limited tactical variety, while boss fights provided more distinctive challenges. So the combat’s moment-to-moment feel may appeal more than the range of situations it is asked to handle.
What did PC Gamer’s review praise and criticize?
PC Gamer’s Kerry Brunskill scored the PC version 74 in a review published May 20, 2025. The score is that reviewer’s assessment, not an aggregate or player rating; the review was conducted on a system with an Intel i9-13900HX and RTX 4090. Brunskill praised the tactile forging, weapon customization, exploration, and the heft of attacks.
The main reservations were repetition and pacing. The review points to recurring progress roadblocks and item-fetching tasks, alongside ordinary enemy encounters that can feel similar. Its conclusion was: “Blades of Fire can be great fun, but it definitely overstays its welcome.”
Is Blades of Fire worth playing?
It is a stronger fit for players who want to experiment with weapon construction and enjoy measured, stamina-conscious melee combat than for those seeking consistently varied encounters or a brisk campaign. The core loop has a clear identity, but the PC Gamer review’s concerns about repetition and length are material: enjoying the forge does not guarantee that the surrounding quests will sustain you.

When comparing it with another action-adventure, focus on five practical differences: how hands-on weapon crafting is, how methodical combat feels, how much enemy and boss variety there is, how often quests interrupt momentum, and what features are available in the current version. Those factors are more useful than judging it solely by its dark-fantasy setting.
