The fight does not allow Spirit Ash summons; winning awards the Greatsword of Solitude, the complete Solitude armor set, and 70,000 runes.
Where to find Blackgaol Knight
The boss is inside the Western Nameless Mausoleum in Gravesite Plain. From Scorched Ruins, travel west toward dead trees and glowing worms. How to beat Blackgaol Knight
Cross the opening crossbow volley
Blackgaol Knight begins with a rapid crossbow barrage that may include fire bolts. Run laterally toward the boss rather than straight into the shots, then attack when the volley ends. A shield block is risky: Shacknews warns the volley can break guard, and fire bolts may still deal damage through a block. Use the recovery after the last shot as your first punish window. Punish the sword attacks without overcommitting
After closing in, watch for deliberate sword swings, an overhead or jumping strike, and a ranged sword wave. Dodge the wave to either side; EIP Gaming calls this move “Solitary Moon Slash” and notes it may be followed by a spinning attack at close range: EIP Gaming’s Blackgaol Knight guide. Take a short attack window after a committed move, then be ready to dodge again. Long attack strings can leave you exposed to the next strike.

Choose close or medium spacing to suit your build
There is no single spacing rule that suits every character. Push Square recommends staying close enough to discourage repeated crossbow use. EIP Gaming favors managing medium range and taking openings. Melee builds can press in after the barrage and keep punish windows short; ranged builds can exploit the readable volley and recovery periods. EIP Gaming also describes shield and parry play as viable approaches, though blocking the opening barrage carries the risks above.
Interrupt the heal if you can do so safely
When weakened, the knight may use a healing flask once. Guides place this around half health, but the precise trigger is not established. If the flask animation begins and you are in a safe position to attack, interrupt it; do not trade a hit blindly to reach the boss.

Spirit Ash summons are unavailable in this encounter, according to Shacknews. The guide recommends raising your Scadutree Blessing to level 1 or 2 to improve survivability. That is advice, not an entry requirement or a guaranteed threshold for winning. Scadutree Blessings are a Shadow of the Erdtree progression system that improves damage and damage negation.
