In short: Pokémon Legends: Z-A is available for Nintendo Switch, while its Nintendo Switch 2 Edition offers Nintendo-described improvements to performance, resolution, and frame rates. Nintendo does not publish exact resolution or frame-rate targets on the product pages cited here. The Switch 2 Edition’s enhanced features require a Switch 2; if you already own the Switch game, you can buy a separate Upgrade Pack.

What changes in the Switch 2 Edition?

Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as having “improved performance, enhanced resolution, and smoother frame rates.” Its UK edition page similarly describes higher frame rates and resolution. These are qualitative claims, not published benchmarks: Nintendo’s cited pages do not specify a target resolution, average frame rate, or measured performance difference. So the dependable comparison is that Nintendo promises a smoother, higher-resolution presentation on Switch 2—not a particular pixel count or FPS figure.

Nintendo lists the game’s file size on its US Switch 2 Edition page as 6 GB for Nintendo Switch and 11.3 GB for Nintendo Switch 2. Those are product-page figures, not performance measurements, and software sizes can change with updates. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition product page

Which version works on each console?

Version Nintendo Switch Nintendo Switch 2
Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch Playable as the Switch version Playable with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch; Switch 2 enhancements are not included by the base game alone
Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Switch 2-exclusive features are unavailable; the game card plays as the Switch version Playable with the Switch 2 Edition features

Nintendo UK says the Switch 2 Edition is playable only on Switch 2. If its physical or virtual game card is used in a Switch, it plays the Switch version without the Switch 2-exclusive features. How to choose: new purchase or upgrade?

If you already own the Switch game

Keep your existing Pokémon Legends: Z-A game and purchase the separate Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack to access the enhanced edition on Switch 2. The Upgrade Pack is digital content for Switch 2 and requires the base game; it is not included with the Switch cartridge. Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack

If you are buying the game for Switch 2

Choose the Switch 2 Edition if you want Nintendo’s stated performance, resolution, and frame-rate improvements without taking the base-game-plus-upgrade route. A physical Switch copy is another valid route: Nintendo lists the original game as a physical product and supports it on Switch 2, but you still need the separate Upgrade Pack for the enhanced edition. Does Mega Dimension DLC work with both editions?

Yes. Nintendo Support says the Mega Dimension DLC is compatible with Pokémon Legends: Z-A and the Switch 2 Edition, as long as you have the corresponding base game. The DLC is a separate purchase; it is not the same product as the Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack. Nintendo Support: Pokémon Legends: Z-A DLC
