Google’s interactive “Celebrating Pétanque” Doodle teaches the game’s basic objective: get your team’s metal boules closer to the target boule than the opposing team’s. Google says the first player or team to reach 13 points wins. The Doodle launched on July 31, 2022, and its page invites players to start a random match or challenge friends.
How to play Google’s pétanque game
- Open Google’s “Celebrating Pétanque” Doodle.
- Choose a random match or challenge friends, as offered on the page.
- Throw, toss, or roll your team’s metal boules toward the target boule. The goal is to finish closer to it than the opposing team’s boules.
- Play through rounds and score according to the Doodle’s game. Google says the first player or team to reach 13 points wins.
The Doodle gives a beginner-level explanation rather than a complete rulebook for competitive pétanque.
How scoring and tactics work
The central contest is about which team gets its boules closest to the target. Google’s page says the first player or team to reach 13 points wins; it does not provide a full breakdown of official scoring in competition.
Placement and shooting
Getting a boule close to the target is not the only approach. Google also describes “shooting”: trying to knock an opponent’s boule away from the target. That makes the game a contest of both placement and disruption.

What the Doodle says about pétanque’s origins
Google’s history section says modern pétanque originated in Provence, France, in 1907. In Google’s account, a local café owner adapted the rules for a player whose rheumatism made running difficult, creating a shorter field and a stationary toss. Google also describes earlier stone-throwing games and the later use of a target ball. These details are Google’s brief historical account, not a complete history of the sport.
Playing the Doodle versus playing pétanque in person
The Doodle is an online introduction, not a physical pétanque set. Playing the sport in person involves metal boules and a target boule, but Google’s page does not specify equipment dimensions, brands, or buying recommendations. Its invitation to play a random match or challenge friends describes options on the page; it does not establish that every mode or technical access condition remains unchanged.
