Roblox Error 279—sometimes shown with “Failed to connect to the game” or ID 17—means the Roblox app is having trouble establishing a network connection with its servers. It does not, by itself, identify the cause: the issue could involve the app or device, your connection, security settings, or a particular experience. Work through the checks below, starting with the least disruptive.
First, find out how widely the error occurs
Try joining another experience, then compare what happens on another device or internet connection if you can. If only one experience fails, the problem may be specific to that experience; Roblox notes that a bad or empty experience can produce experience-specific symptoms. If several experiences fail only on one device, focus on that device and its Roblox app. If the same problem follows your connection across devices, investigate the network.
Roblox describes Error 279 as a connection problem between the client application and its servers, and lists PCs, Macs, and mobile devices as affected platforms. Its guidance also names firewall interference, low bandwidth, and inconsistent wireless connectivity as possible factors—not a single confirmed cause. Refresh Roblox and the device
Close Roblox completely, reopen it, and restart the device. If the error continues, use Roblox’s platform-specific instructions rather than applying desktop steps to a phone or tablet. Its current Error 279 page lists separate guidance for Windows 7/8.1/10, Windows 11 (64-bit), macOS 10.13 and above, iOS 12 and above, Android 6 and above, specified Fire OS devices, and ChromeOS 53 and above. These are the platform labels currently displayed on the support page; compatibility guidance can change.

- Windows and Mac: Roblox recommends reinstalling the app. Follow the current instructions for your operating system; do not remove files or folders unless Roblox’s instructions for that platform specifically direct you to.
- iPhone, iPad, and Android: Force-close Roblox and reopen it, then restart the device. If needed, follow Roblox’s reinstall and platform-specific troubleshooting steps. Check app permissions where the platform guidance calls for them.
- Amazon Fire and ChromeOS: Use the dedicated instructions for the supported device and OS. Rebooting, reinstalling, checking permissions, or confirming date and time may be relevant depending on the platform.

Test the internet connection
Try a different internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot, if available. If Roblox works there, that points toward the original network rather than proving a particular router or ISP fault. If it still fails on another connection, continue with the device and app checks and consider contacting Roblox Support.

On a compatible desktop setup, connect by Ethernet if possible. Roblox recommends a wired connection as a way to rule out Wi-Fi issues; it is a diagnostic option, not a guaranteed repair. If another connection does not resolve ongoing network trouble, Roblox recommends contacting your internet provider.
Check desktop security and browser settings
On Windows or Mac, security software may prevent Roblox or Roblox Studio from communicating with Roblox’s servers. Roblox recommends checking whether firewall software is responsible and allowing Roblox through it. If you temporarily test by disabling a firewall, do so only briefly, restore protection immediately, and add an app exception instead of leaving the firewall off. Follow the security software maker’s instructions for creating an exception.

Roblox also recommends checking browser security settings and extensions when troubleshooting desktop connection issues. Review recent changes and test with extensions disabled only if you can do so safely; restore your usual settings afterward.
Router ports: follow Roblox’s guidance, not guesswork
Roblox’s general connection page lists UDP ports 49152–65535. Its firewall and router guidance says client ports are selected dynamically for each experience and that blocking UDP packets on any port may cause problems. This is Roblox’s published network guidance, not a guarantee that opening ports will fix Error 279. Avoid changing router rules unless you understand the consequences; on a school, workplace, or otherwise managed network, ask the network administrator. Your ISP or router maker may need to help with network-level restrictions.

If the issue remains after trying another connection, contact your ISP for network troubleshooting. For an unresolved Roblox issue, submit a support request with details that help narrow down whether the failure is tied to the account, device, experience, or network.
