These are premise and setting comparisons based on Rockstar’s official product description in its PlayStation 5 listing for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition. They are not a complete comparison of gameplay systems.
Which game should you play first?
Choose Vice City if its premise appeals to you
Start with Vice City if you want the focused, era-forward premise of Tommy Vercetti’s rise amid betrayal and revenge in a tropical town. That recommendation is an inference from Rockstar’s description, not a claim that the game is objectively better.
Choose San Andreas if its premise appeals to you
Start with San Andreas if CJ’s family-and-street story, unfolding across an entire state, sounds more compelling. Rockstar explicitly describes CJ traveling across the state; the contrast in scope follows from that wording.

If you have no preference, choose by protagonist and setting rather than assuming one title is longer, more difficult, or more expansive in its mechanics. The official descriptions cited here do not settle those questions.
What does The Definitive Edition include?
Rockstar’s PlayStation 5 listing for Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition includes both Vice City and San Andreas, alongside Grand Theft Auto III. Rockstar advertises new lighting and environmental upgrades, high-resolution textures, increased draw distances, and Grand Theft Auto V-style controls and targeting for the trilogy edition.

Those enhancements describe this trilogy edition; they should not be assumed to apply to every original release or platform version. The PlayStation 5 listing gives November 11, 2021 as the trilogy edition’s release date. That is the bundle’s date, not the original release date of either game.
Can you buy a physical edition with both games?
Rockstar’s 2021 launch announcement said the trilogy was available digitally and described physical releases for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4 on December 7, 2021. The PlayStation 5 product listing confirms the trilogy edition as a product, but does not establish current physical stock or retailer availability.

Before buying, check the retailer’s current listing for your region, platform, and edition. A physical trilogy copy is the relevant format to investigate if you want both games together; confirm that the specific copy includes the platform version you need.
