Its biggest drawbacks in reviews are the campaign’s brevity and difficulty that can feel uneven. It is a better fit for players who enjoy a demanding retro-style challenge than for anyone seeking a long campaign or online co-op.
What is Spidersaurs?
Developed and published by WayForward, Spidersaurs released on Steam on July 14, 2022. WayForward lists versions for Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation and Xbox; the sources establish digital storefront availability, not a physical retail edition. WayForward’s game page and the Steam listing provide platform and game details.
InGest Corp has engineered dinosaur-spider hybrids as a food source, but the creatures escape. Former taste-testers Adrian and Victoria take on the monsters across the facility. WayForward presents the action as an homage to games such as Contra and Gunstar Heroes, while the animated opening draws on the feel of 1980s cartoon introductions. The premise is deliberately over-the-top rather than a serious science-fiction setup. WayForward’s Spidersaurs database entry gives more background.
How does the action and campaign work?
The game is a 2D run-and-gun with six stages. Players choose Adrian or Victoria and fight through enemies and bosses using a selection of weapons. The Steam listing describes twelve weapons, unlockable abilities, and three difficulty settings. It also lists unlockable arcade and speedrun modes, which provide reasons to return after the main campaign.

That structure is easy to understand if you like classic side-scrolling action: move, jump, fire, and adapt to each stage’s threats. But familiarity is not the same as perfect execution. Reviews note friction around challenge, aiming or level design, so players looking for a consistently smooth or forgiving run should be cautious.
What do reviews say about its strengths and drawbacks?
| Area | What reviewers and listings establish |
|---|---|
| Presentation | Reviewers commonly praise the colorful art, character and enemy designs, animation, voice work and music. Nintendo Life’s Switch review particularly highlights the presentation and soundtrack. |
| Challenge | Critics differ on whether the difficulty is satisfying. Some describe it as steep or inconsistent; Nintendo Life reported sharp variation between stages. |
| Length and replay | Reviews characterize the campaign as short. Difficulty settings and unlockable arcade and speedrun modes add replay options, but do not change the campaign’s brief overall scope. |
| Action and level design | Reviewers recognize the familiar run-and-gun foundation, while some identify friction in aiming or level design. These are critical judgments, not universal findings. |
Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page showed a 71 Metascore from eight reviews when retrieved in 2026: two positive, six mixed and zero negative. That is a small, platform-specific snapshot, not a rating for every version or a permanent consensus. Metacritic’s Switch critic reviews may change over time.

Nintendo Life also described a specific problem in its review playthrough: after a Game Over, the epilogue level would not load until the reviewer replayed the previous level. That is an account of the review build and experience, not evidence that the issue persists in the current version. Read Nintendo Life’s Switch review for its full assessment.
Does Spidersaurs have co-op?
Yes. Steam lists local shared-screen play for one or two players, so you can play alongside someone on the same system. The available sources confirm local co-op but do not establish online co-op; do not buy it expecting to play together remotely over the internet.

Who is Spidersaurs for?
- Consider it if: you enjoy Contra-like run-and-gun action, colorful cartoon presentation, local co-op, or replaying short campaigns on different difficulties.
- Think twice if: you want a lengthy story campaign, a reliably even difficulty curve, or confirmed online co-op.
Overall, the reviews point to a visually lively retro homage whose appeal depends on how much you enjoy its demanding, sometimes uneven action. The short campaign is a meaningful limitation, though its extra modes and local co-op may make the format more appealing for repeat runs.
