Start with the daytime rooftop route reported by Game8: reach Rouge Sector 4, climb the northeast ladder, and search the roof. To evolve Riolu, raise its Friendship, then have it gain a level during the day.
Where to find Riolu
Game8 reports a daytime Riolu encounter on a rooftop in Rouge Sector 4, northwest of Lumiose City and east of the Poké Ball Boutique. Its route uses the ladder at the northeast edge of the area. This is a guide-reported location, not an official confirmation: other guides name different rooftops and conditions.
- Go to Rouge Sector 4, northwest of Lumiose City and east of the Poké Ball Boutique.
- Find the ladder on the northeast side and climb to the rooftop.
- Search the roof during the day for Riolu.
- If it does not appear, Game8 suggests resting at a bench to change the time and reroll the encounter chance, then checking again.
Other guide reports do not fully agree with this route. PowerPyx places Riolu on a rooftop in Magenta Sector 9 and reports that it appears only during the day in sunny weather. VGC describes a rooftop approach from Wild Zone 3 and calls Riolu a roaming encounter. The sources do not establish which location or conditions are universally reliable.

How to evolve Riolu into Lucario
Riolu evolves into Lucario when it has high Friendship and the evolution check happens during the day. GamesRadar says to make Riolu gain at least one level after it reaches the required Friendship; it also reports that the game indicates when Riolu is ready to evolve. Nintendo Life likewise identifies high Friendship and daytime as the conditions.
- Build Friendship with Riolu.
- Once it is ready, have Riolu gain a level during the day.
- If it does not evolve, continue raising Friendship and try another level-up during daytime.
Ways to raise Riolu’s Friendship
Guide-reported ways to build Friendship include battling with Riolu, running around the city with it, having it break Mega Crystals and obstacles, feeding it berries, and visiting cafes. No fixed count of cafe visits or other actions is established as a guarantee, so check the game’s readiness indication rather than relying on a set number.
- Battle and explore: bring Riolu into battles and travel around the city with it.
- Use it to clear obstacles: have Riolu break Mega Crystals and other obstacles.
- Feed it and visit cafes: berries and cafe visits are also reported Friendship activities.
The Pokémon Company’s official overview notes that some Pokémon evolve through methods beyond leveling up, so training strategies can vary: official Pokémon Legends: Z-A overview.
