Ambessa Medarda is a Noxian general and the leader of the Medarda family. Riot introduced her as a playable League of Legends champion in patch 14.22, as part of its Arcane Season 2 celebration. She is classified as a Fighter / Assassin, with High difficulty; her abilities center on chaining casts, movement commands, dashes and empowered attacks.
Who is Ambessa?
Riot’s official champion biography describes Ambessa as a Noxian general and the head of the Medarda family. Riot also featured her in its Arcane Season 2 celebration, under the name “The Matriarch of War.” That establishes her connection to the promotion; it does not, on its own, resolve every continuity question between the game and the animated series.
When did Ambessa come out in League?
Ambessa became playable on November 6, 2024, at 19:00 UTC, with patch 14.22. Riot’s patch 14.22 notes announced that launch time. It is the original release date, not a statement about when she was most recently changed.
What do Ambessa’s abilities do?
Riot classifies Ambessa as a Fighter / Assassin and labels her difficulty High. Her abilities are Drakehound’s Step (passive), Cunning Sweep / Sundering Slam, Repudiation, Lacerate and Public Execution. The core mechanic is the passive, Drakehound’s Step: casts build a charge, and movement or attack input during a cast makes her dash a short distance after the ability finishes. Her next attack can spend a charge for added range, damage and attack speed, while restoring energy.

In practical terms, her ability casts are meant to flow into movement and attacks rather than being treated as isolated button presses. Riot’s October 22, 2024 abilities rundown explains the passive’s charges and their effects. That is a description of the stated mechanics, not a current build or performance recommendation.
What does the available information say about her difficulty and strength?
“High” is Riot’s difficulty classification, not a measure of win rate or competitive strength. Riot’s patch 14.24 notes recorded an early balance adjustment: the W shield and E damage were reduced, and Riot said she remained strong in higher skill brackets at that time. Those 2024 notes are historical context; they do not establish Ambessa’s standing in the live game in 2026. The cited official materials do not provide a current win rate, pick rate or tier ranking.
