For a free game to be a useful recommendation today, it needs to meet two tests: it was a notable pick in 2024, and its base game is still listed as free to play. The shortlist below covers different kinds of play rather than claiming one objective winner. Store listings can change, so check the official page for your region and device before installing.
What “free” means for these games
Here, “free” means you can start the listed base game without paying an upfront purchase price. It does not mean every item, expansion, or progression route is free. Steam explains that Steam Wallet funds can be used for supported in-game items and content in its Steam Wallet FAQ. The cost and role of optional purchases differ by game.
The picks are based on storefront listings and recent editorial recommendations, not hands-on testing or a measured ranking of quality. A 2024 VG Insights/Sensor Tower report summary noted that only two new free-to-play titles entered Steam’s top 10 in the preceding three years and remained there in 2024. - Start with the kind of play you want. Pick a story-led game, a competitive multiplayer game, a simulation, or another genre that fits your time and interests.
- Check the store on your device. Search the title in the relevant official store and confirm that it is marked free to play in your region. A general catalog listing is not a guarantee of compatibility with your particular device.
- Inspect what the free listing includes. Look for paid expansions, in-game purchases, and other add-ons; the free base game may not include them.
- Check the official platform and account details. Read the current game page for supported devices and any account or installation requirements before downloading.
