What changed in GTA Online?
Rockstar integrated BattlEye Anti-Cheat into GTA Online with GTAV Title Update 1.69 on September 17, 2024. The update notes also added a launcher option to disable BattlEye for Story Mode and the -nobattleye launch argument for Story Mode use. Rockstar’s Title Update 1.69 notes describe those changes.
Rockstar says BattlEye is kernel anti-cheat software intended to detect cheating software accessing GTA Online servers, attempts to manipulate protected game code, and actions that sabotage other players’ experience. It needs to be active during GTA Online sessions. That is Rockstar’s stated purpose for the software, not an independent assessment of its effectiveness. Rockstar’s BattlEye FAQ

Rockstar also says GTAV and GTA Online are not officially supported on Steam Deck. Its FAQ, last updated June 17, 2025, states: “Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online.” Rockstar’s FAQ

Does this mean BattlEye cannot work with Proton?
No. Valve’s Steamworks documentation lists BattlEye among anti-cheat middleware that can support Proton, but says developers must enable the game’s support. That general capability does not mean Rockstar has enabled BattlEye for GTA Online on Steam Deck. What does the BattlEye-required alert mean?
Rockstar says the alert can appear if BattlEye is disabled on PC or when attempting to launch GTA Online on Steam Deck. Its September 20, 2024 support article identifies the Steam Deck alert as expected under the stated support restriction; it does not suggest that turning BattlEye off makes online play possible. If you see it on a Windows PC
Rockstar’s troubleshooting guidance says BattlEye may be disabled. Enable it in Rockstar Games Launcher settings, then restart. If you see it on Steam Deck
Under Rockstar’s published position, the alert reflects that GTA Online is unavailable on the handheld because BattlEye is unsupported there. Docks, controllers, and other accessories do not change that game-side support status.

Has Steam Deck support been fixed?
The latest official compatibility statement identified here is Rockstar’s FAQ last updated June 17, 2025, which still says Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online. No later official reversal is established by the available sources. For a future change, Rockstar’s support FAQ is the relevant place to check.
