This is a categorized reference to that page, not a verified list of every NPC and story character in the game.
Marriage candidates: 12 romance options
The Villagers and Marriage pages list six bachelors and six bachelorettes. In single-player, only characters marked “single” in the Social tab can be married.
Bachelors
- Alex
- Elliott
- Harvey
- Sam
- Sebastian
- Shane
Bachelorettes
- Abigail
- Emily
- Haley
- Leah
- Maru
- Penny
Romance has two milestones: at eight hearts, give an eligible candidate a bouquet to start dating; at ten hearts, present a Mermaid’s Pendant to propose. See the Marriage guide for the full requirements.
Non-marriage candidates
These characters appear in the Villagers page’s non-marriage-candidate group. They are distinct from both romance options and the non-giftable NPCs listed below.

How villagers fit into daily play
Villagers follow routines, so where you find them can vary with the time and weather. They may offer quests, and their responses to gifts depend on what they like or dislike. The Villagers page is the reference for their groupings and general interactions.

Character details can vary by game version
The official Stardew Valley 1.6 changelog lists character-related additions and changes, including dynamic dialogue tied to events, restored dialogue, custom gift reactions, and winter outfits for NPCs. These updates are a reason to treat character interactions as potentially version-sensitive rather than assume every detail is identical across versions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does this include every Stardew Valley character?
No. This list follows the three groups on the Villagers page. The wider NPC category also has named pages for entities outside those groups, including the Old Mariner and Junimos. Because this reference does not reconcile every NPC and story-character page into one exhaustive roster, it should not be read as a complete census of everyone in the game.
