That was a milestone, not its record: SteamDB later logged an all-time peak of 917,272 on June 20, while Steam Charts lists a different peak of 890,713. By October 2026, tracker snapshots showed counts in the low thousands.
What is Banana, and what do you do in it?
Banana is a free-to-play clicker developed by Sky, AestheticSpartan, and Banana Game. Steam lists its release date as April 23, 2024. The basic loop is exactly what the name suggests: click a banana to gain bananas. Steam’s store description also says players receive a banana drop every three hours, with each banana made by the community. Steam’s listing describes it as a clicker in which “you click the Banana to gain even more Bananas!”

How many people are playing Banana on Steam?
Player counts change continuously, so a live counter is only a snapshot. In October 2026, SteamDB displayed 2,469 concurrent players and a 24-hour peak of 4,061. Steam Charts showed 3,290 players at 2026-10-06 00:04:58 UTC and a 24-hour peak of 3,465. These are separate snapshots from different retrieval times, not synchronized readings; compare like measures and timestamps rather than treating them as one count.
How high did Banana’s player count get?
The headline’s 160,000-plus figure describes concurrent players during the game’s 2024 surge, not lifetime downloads, total owners, or unique people. GameSpot reported more than 155,000 concurrent players on June 7, 2024, and more than 420,000 on June 14. The peak figures vary by tracker:

Why did Banana become so popular?
The available reporting gives context, but does not establish one definitive cause for the surge. Banana variants and Steam item trading were part of the game’s appeal: PC Gamer reported in May 2024 that items could be collected, traded, or sold on the Steam Marketplace, where values fluctuate. GameSpot reported that players received a new banana variant every three hours and that the in-game item store then offered five versions for 25 cents each. That price and lineup are historical details from June 2024, not confirmation of today’s offers.

PC Gamer also reported that creator Robert Partyson said Banana was inspired by Egg, and described a Steam forum post calling it “a worse made egg game.” These details help explain the game’s community and item context; they do not prove that trading, bots, or any one incentive caused its player spike. PC Gamer’s May 29, 2024 report covers that context, while GameSpot’s June 2024 coverage records the reported rise and item-store details.
