Former Toys for Bob artist Nicholas Kole publicly referred to “the Crash 5 that never was” in July 2024. A later investigation by gaming historian Liam Robertson, covered by GamesRadar+, reported the crossover concept and the live-service rationale. Those details should be treated as reported, not confirmed by Activision.
What was publicly confirmed about Crash Bandicoot 5?
On July 15, 2024, GameSpot reported that Nicholas Kole, a former Toys for Bob senior concept artist, said a Crash Bandicoot 5 project had been in development and was cancelled. Kole made the remark while responding to a question about Project Dragon, another project that had been discussed as a possible Spyro game. He said: “It is not Spyro, but some day folks will hear about the Crash 5 that never was and it’s gonna break hearts.” GameSpot’s report said Project Dragon and Crash 5 were unrelated, separate projects cancelled by different studios, and that the studio working on Crash 5 was not known at the time.
Kole’s statement established that a project existed and was cancelled; it did not explain why. It also did not say that the game was finished or close to release.
Was Crash 5 planned as a Spyro crossover?
That detail comes from later reporting. In August 2024, GamesRadar+ reported on an investigation by gaming historian Liam Robertson that described the early Crash 5 project as a planned Crash-and-Spyro crossover. The reported concept is not an official announcement of a game, and the available account does not establish that the project advanced beyond an early stage. It should not be confused with Project Dragon, which GameSpot described as unrelated to Crash 5.

Was the game cancelled because Activision wanted live-service titles?
GamesRadar+’s account of Robertson’s investigation says Activision considered Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time’s sales underwhelming and was pursuing more live-service projects. This is the reported explanation—not a publicly confirmed Activision rationale. The sources do not establish that Activision itself publicly explained the cancellation or that the reported sales assessment was the sole reason.
Sales context needs the same care: Game Developer attributed a figure of more than five million copies sold for Crash 4 to design director Toby Schadt. That attributed figure does not, by itself, show what Activision considered an acceptable result or establish the publisher’s decision-making. Game Developer’s coverage and GamesRadar+’s account provide the secondary reporting behind these claims.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time
Crash Bandicoot 4 is an existing release, not the cancelled fifth game. GameSpot lists its first release date as October 2, 2020, and its platforms as Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. GameSpot’s report and game listing provide those details.
Spyro: A Realm Beyond
Toys for Bob has separately announced Spyro: A Realm Beyond, planned for Spring 2027. Xbox Wire’s June 7, 2026 announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, cloud, Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, and PlayStation 5. Studio head Paul Yan said the team was “so thrilled to finally come out of stealth and confirm that a new Spyro game is indeed what we’ve been up to these past few years.” This is a separate announced Spyro game; the announcement does not say that Crash 5 has returned or that the new Spyro title is the cancelled crossover.
