Aimbot Does It in Hardware: How the Aim Lab Robot Worked

Hackaday reported a proof-of-concept robot that spotted Aim Lab targets in screenshots, moved a mouse with omniwheels, and clicked on target hitboxes—not a demonstrated multiplayer-game cheat.

A robot featured by Hackaday moved a mouse with physical omniwheels to aim and click at targets in Aim Lab. It was a proof of concept for an aim-training simulation—not a demonstrated cheat in a live multiplayer game.

How did the hardware aimbot work?

Hackaday’s Bryan Cockfield described the project on April 30, 2022. The system combined software that identified targets with a physical mechanism that moved the mouse:

  1. Capture the screen: Python took screenshots of the computer display.
  2. Find a target: A computer-vision algorithm recognized high-contrast targets in those images.
  3. Move the mouse: A PID controller operated omniwheels attached to a mouse, steering the cursor toward a target.
  4. Click: Once the cursor reached the target’s hitbox, the system triggered a mouse click.

The “hardware” part was the physical mouse movement: target recognition began with screenshots and computer vision, while omniwheels and PID control translated the aiming decision into movement. Hackaday does not say this build used a capture card, a second computer, or a commercial cheat device. Hackaday’s project report describes the mechanism.

Was it built for a real multiplayer game?

No. The featured robot was trained in Aim Lab, a first-person-shooter training simulation. Hackaday described it as a proof of concept and explicitly distinguished it from a cheat operating in a real multiplayer game. The report does mention a separate Valorant build involving two computers passing game information, but that was not the Aim Lab robot described here.

How long did the build take, and how well did it perform?

Hackaday reported that builder Kamal spent over two months on construction and, especially, tuning the PID controller. The article said the robot could rival pro FPS shooters in the aim trainer, but it gave no score or controlled comparison data. That claim is therefore a reported comparison, not a published benchmark or an independently replicated result.

Cockfield also reported that an omniwheel motor burned out and suggested the build might otherwise have exceeded the platform’s top human scores. The article does not provide data establishing that outcome.

What the demonstration does—and does not—show

  • It shows one way to combine screen-based target recognition with physical mouse movement and clicking in a training simulation.
  • It does not show the robot cheating in a live multiplayer match, bypassing anti-cheat, or working across commercial games.
  • It does not establish that hardware-assisted cheating is more common or more effective: Hackaday said this proof of concept was unlikely to make multiplayer aimbots worse or more common.

Those distinctions matter because a physical mechanism moving a mouse is not, by itself, evidence that the system can read or act on a live game’s internal state. The reported Aim Lab setup used screenshots and computer vision, and its performance claims are limited to Hackaday’s account of that demonstration.
