Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Ashes of War let you replace the skill on a compatible armament and, where permitted, choose an affinity for it. This guide explains how those two functions work in Elden Ring and clarifies what the available sources establish about Shadow of the Erdtree. It is not an exhaustive item-by-item catalog: the verified sources do not establish a complete current list of every Ash or its location.
What do Ashes of War do?
An Ash of War can change the skill of a compatible weapon. Its description specifies the weapon types it can be applied to; compatibility is not universal. Bandai Namco’s official combat guide explains that players will find Ashes as they explore and that each one details the types of weapons it can be applied to.
Some weapons have preset Unique Skills that cannot be changed through this system. The same guide notes that such weapons are generally powerful in their own right; that does not mean every weapon with a fixed skill has the same strengths or role.
How do Ashes of War and affinities work?
Applying an Ash can also let you select an affinity, but only from the options allowed by the weapon and Ash combination. Skill replacement and affinity selection are related parts of the application process, not the same effect: the Ash grants a skill, while an affinity changes the weapon’s damage and attribute-scaling profile. The official guide cautions that some combinations cannot be made.

#1 Best Overall
- ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition contains the Elden Ring Base Game + Shadow of the Erdtree Expansion + Additional Content (including Torrent Skins, New Armors, and More...)
- MASSIVE OPEN WORLD
- DEEP, CUSTOMIZABLE COMBAT
- NEW STARTING CLASSES
- NEW PLAYER-FRIENDLY ENHANCEMENTS
When deciding between two Ashes, check three things in the item descriptions and application menu:
- Weapon compatibility: Is the Ash usable on the armament you intend to equip?
- Granted skill: Does its skill suit how you want to fight?
- Available affinities: Does the combination offer an affinity that fits your build?
These checks are more useful than treating any one Ash as universally best. The verified sources do not establish current damage values or a universal ranking.

Does “All Ashes of War” include Shadow of the Erdtree?
Shadow of the Erdtree adds new equipment, Skills, and Ashes of War to Elden Ring, according to Bandai Namco’s expansion announcement and the Steam expansion listing. So a collection covering both the base game and expansion should be understood as broader than a base-game-only collection.
Those sources confirm that the expansion adds Ashes, but they do not provide a complete, current inventory with every name and location. This guide therefore covers the mechanic and expansion scope rather than claiming to list every Ash of War in the game. For a specific item, confirm its name, location, and compatibility against current in-game information or a current catalog; details can depend on the game’s patch state.

Where can you find a full item list or DLC map?
A community-maintained Elden Ring Wiki.gg Ashes of War catalog is a useful starting point for item names and discovery information. As with any secondary catalog, check individual details against current game information, especially when a patch may affect mechanics or compatibility.
For Shadow Realm exploration, Bandai Namco lists a printed Books of Knowledge Volume III: Shadow of the Erdtree. The publisher describes illustrated maps marking items and points of interest, along with progression and build guidance. It is an optional reference, not a requirement for using Ashes of War; retailer availability is not established here.
