Afterplay is a browser-based retro-game platform designed to let you move a game and its saves between devices. It advertises support for more than 30 systems and features such as cloud saves, fast-forward and rewind, but compatibility and performance depend on the game, browser and hardware. You supply your own ROM files; Afterplay says it does not provide them.
What Afterplay does
Afterplay runs retro games through a web-based platform, with companion app listings for mobile devices. Its central promise is continuity: start playing on one device and pick up from a synced save on another, rather than manually transferring save files. Founder Patrick Corrigan described that goal in a July 14, 2026 interview: “Honestly, it started pretty selfishly; I just wanted to play a game on my laptop then carry on from the exact same spot on my phone, no setup, the save just sitting there waiting. That part we’ve got right; it’s the heart of what Afterplay does.” (Time Extension interview)
The service’s product page lists web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, iPadOS and Android availability. A web service can reduce installation and save-transfer friction, but it does not make every game run equally well on every device.
Which systems and features does it advertise?
Afterplay’s Google Play listing, updated April 12, 2026, advertises more than 30 systems. Named examples include Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Nintendo DS, NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, PlayStation, Sega Genesis, Sega CD, Neo Geo, WonderSwan and PC Engine. This is a platform-level list, not a guarantee that every title will work on every device or browser; app availability and listing details can also vary by region. (Google Play listing)

The same listing describes a broad set of emulator conveniences:
- Cloud saves, automatic saves every 20 seconds and multiple save profiles.
- Fast-forward, rewind and slow motion.
- Cheat codes, multiplayer and Game Boy/Game Boy Color link-cable support.
- RetroAchievements, customizable touch controls and video shaders.
A compatible gamepad is optional: the listing advertises gamepad support, but does not establish that any particular controller works with every device and browser combination.
What is free, and what does Premium add?
An Afterplay product-page snapshot crawled approximately three weeks before October 7, 2026 showed the following tier details. The displayed price and feature policy are snapshots, not a promise of current or permanent terms. Check Afterplay’s product page for the offer available to you.

“In-game saves” and “save states” are listed separately in the snapshot, so they should not be treated as the same feature or the same limit.
Does Afterplay provide ROMs?
No. In the July 14, 2026 interview, Corrigan said, “We don’t provide ROMs at all.” He said users upload their own files and are responsible for what they put on the service. That is the founder’s description of the platform, not legal advice about whether a particular ROM is lawful to obtain or use in a particular jurisdiction. (Time Extension interview)
Afterplay also has a separate storefront for licensed retro-style indie games. Corrigan described publisher deals with Incube8 Games and Mega Cat Studios. At the time of that July 2026 interview, he reported a catalog of over 50 games; that was a founder-reported count, and the catalog can change. A Pocket Gamer storefront report says purchased titles can be played across web, mobile and desktop with cloud saves. Check the store for a specific title’s current availability.

The Google Play listing says Afterplay is not affiliated with Nintendo, Sony, SEGA, SNK, NEC, Bandai or The Pokémon Company. That disclaimer does not change the distinction between user-provided ROM files and games licensed for the storefront.

The practical question is not only whether Afterplay lists a system, but whether a particular game runs acceptably on your device and browser. Corrigan identified iOS Safari as a recurring engineering constraint, citing its memory limits and slower adoption of some web standards. He also described larger Nintendo DS games as a challenging memory case, for which Afterplay used streaming techniques. These comments explain potential trouble spots; they are not a compatibility guarantee or performance test. (Time Extension interview)

Pay attention to whether it loads, responds to touch or controller input, and maintains a usable save across devices. A system appearing in a list cannot establish how a particular game will perform on your hardware.

How does Afterplay compare with a locally installed emulator?
Neither approach is a blanket winner. Afterplay’s appeal is reduced setup and cloud-based continuity; a local emulator avoids depending on a cloud account for its save workflow. The right choice depends on what matters to you:
- Setup and portability: Afterplay is built around browser access across devices. A local emulator requires installation and may need manual save transfer when you switch devices.
- Saves and account dependence: Afterplay emphasizes cloud sync and saves. Consider whether you want saves tied to an online service and account, or handled locally.
- Compatibility and performance: Compare the specific game and your own hardware. The available sources establish no benchmark, compatibility rate or universal performance ranking.
- Features and cost: Check which conveniences are included in the current tier terms; the published snapshot’s price and feature split may change.
- Game sourcing: Afterplay says you bring ROM files. Its storefront is a separate route for licensed indie games, not a source of ROMs for the listed classic systems.
What about systems on the roadmap?
In the July 2026 interview, Corrigan said MAME was in progress and described PSP and Dreamcast as likely candidates. He characterized PS2-class systems as substantially harder because they need dynamic recompilation. These are roadmap comments, not announced launches or promises of availability or performance. Check Afterplay’s current system list rather than assuming a future system has arrived. (Time Extension interview)
