All 54 Official Clickwheel iPod Games Were Preserved—Here’s What That Means

A community project says all 54 official clickwheel iPod games are now preserved. Here’s why DRM mattered, which iPods are listed as compatible, and what setup involves.

As of September 8, 2025, a community preservation project reported that all 54 official clickwheel iPod games had been brought together, with Real Soccer 2009 completing the collection. The games are preserved for compatible physical iPods, but playing them is not as simple as downloading files: Apple’s FairPlay protections tied games to account and computer authorization, and the project’s setup requires compatible hardware and careful syncing.

What was preserved—and when

Apple sold downloadable games for clickwheel iPods for a short period in the late 2000s, then removed them from the iTunes Store in October 2011. The community project’s September 2025 milestone concerns the 54 official games reported by Kyle Orland at Ars Technica. The project changelog records Real Soccer 2009 as added in Release 15 on September 8, 2025, completing that set.

There is a count discrepancy worth keeping in view. The Internet Archive description for Release 16 says its package contains 56 commercially released games, while Ars and the project milestone report 54 official games. The available sources do not explain the difference, so the archive’s package description should not be treated as a reconciliation of the 54-game milestone. The Archive item displays October 8, 2025 as its publication date; the project changelog dates Release 16 to October 3, 2025, when it records a size reduction.

Why archived files were not enough

Copies of game files had survived, but those files were protected by Apple’s FairPlay DRM. Ars Technica reported that authorization linked a game both to the Apple account used to buy it and to the hardware identity of the iTunes installation used to sync it. As a result, finding a copied game file did not by itself make it usable on another computer or iPod.

To assemble the collection, contributors used surviving purchased copies and account authorization in a shared iTunes virtual-machine setup. Ars reported that the shared library drew on 18 synced accounts, and that one contributor had maintained copies of 39 distinct games. Those figures describe the reported preservation effort, not a requirement for someone following the project’s setup instructions.

Which iPods are compatible

The project is for physical clickwheel iPods, not iPod touch models. Its README lists these supported generations:

  • iPod Classic: 5G, 5.5G, 6G, 6.5G, and 7G.
  • iPod nano: 3G and 4G.
  • iPod nano 5G, with a display-border caveat noted by the project.

Ars summarizes compatibility more broadly as iPod Classic 5G and later, or iPod nano 3G and later. For a specific device, use the project README’s generation list and caveat rather than assuming that every clickwheel iPod qualifies.

What setup involves

The maintainer documents a workflow using a virtual machine, USB passthrough to connect the iPod, and iTunes to install authorization keys before transferring the game files. Ars reports that after the collection was consolidated, compatible iPods could receive it offline without additional Apple server checks. That offline transfer does not remove the initial setup and authorization requirements described by the project.

Windows-formatted iPods

The README’s standard Windows virtual-machine approach requires an iPod formatted for Windows. Read the instructions for the relevant model and sync stages before starting; the project does not describe this as a universal, one-click install.

Mac-formatted iPods

The maintainer also describes a more advanced conversion procedure for Mac-formatted devices. Formatting is destructive, and the README warns that content must be synced again afterward. Do not begin a conversion or restore without a backup and a clear plan for restoring the device’s other content.

Protect authorization data and saves

The project README says authorization data is specific to an iPod and its current installation. Restoring the device changes its unique ID, so the project says it must be synced again. The maintainer recommends preserving and backing up the relevant hidden iPod folders and save data. These are project-maintainer instructions; the available reporting does not independently test every device or setup.

The README’s troubleshooting notes also say some connection problems may depend on hardware and suggest trying another cable in those cases. A cable change is a troubleshooting option, not a general requirement or a substitute for following the software and authorization steps.

How to choose a device and project source

If you already own a compatible iPod, check its generation, physical condition, storage, and format before attempting setup. If you are looking for one, the project’s generation list is the relevant compatibility reference; the sources here do not establish current used-device prices or recommend a particular seller. Buying hardware or a sync cable does not provide project files or bypass authorization.

Keep the project’s GitHub instructions and releases distinct from the Internet Archive’s Release 16 item. Ars describes both the virtual-machine instructions and an archive download route. The Archive page identifies Release 16, but its description says 56 commercially released games—a figure the examined sources do not reconcile with the 54-game completion claim.

Why the preservation milestone matters

The work preserves access to a short-lived part of iPod gaming history that would otherwise remain difficult to use even where game files survived. Olsro, the project originator, said in comments quoted by Kyle Orland in Ars Technica on September 8, 2025, that completing it “means this whole part from the early 2000s will remain with us forever.”
