Alisa: Developer’s Cut is a survival-horror game built to evoke the conventions of 1990s horror: fixed camera angles, pre-rendered backgrounds, and tank controls. Critics praised its atmosphere, enemy design, and nostalgic craft, but also noted disorienting camera cuts, combat friction, obscure puzzles, and a punishing stealth sequence. It is most likely to click with players who want that old-school style rather than a modernized version of it.
What critics said about Alisa: Developer’s Cut
Ollie Reynolds gave the North American Nintendo Switch version 9/10 in Nintendo Life’s review, published February 6, 2024. Reynolds praised the creepy enemy designs, varied environments, unlockable weapons and outfits, multiple endings, and New Game+. The review also cautioned that camera cuts can disorient and that the game expects players to embrace old-fashioned mechanics. Read Nintendo Life’s review.
Metacritic’s Nintendo Switch critic page displayed three reviews: Nintendo Life at 90, Cubed3 at 80, and GameCritics at 80. The listed dates are February 6, February 7, and May 28, 2024, respectively. That is the set of reviews displayed on that page, not a complete or current all-platform consensus. Why the retro style is the main point
The game is developed by Casper Croes and published by Top Hat Studios. Its defining choices are familiar to players of older survival horror: fixed-camera presentation, pre-rendered backgrounds, and tank controls. Nintendo Life reviewer Ollie Reynolds framed the appeal clearly: “We should preface this review by clarifying that if you’re someone who hasn’t experienced ‘retro’ survival horror — with pre-rendered backgrounds, fixed camera angles, and tank controls — then a lot of what makes Alisa so wonderful might not resonate with you.” Nintendo Life review.
#1 Best Overall
That distinction matters if you are deciding whether to play it. The mechanics are not merely a visual nod to the era; they shape navigation and combat. For players who enjoy that deliberate, sometimes awkward style, the constraints can strengthen the mood. If you prefer fluid modern movement and camera control, the same design may feel like friction rather than nostalgia.
Where reviews found friction
Camera cuts and combat
Nintendo Life noted that camera transitions can be disorienting. In a fixed-camera game, a new angle can change what is visible or how movement reads, making encounters less immediately intuitive. The review praised the combat and weapons as part of the experience while recognizing that the old-fashioned controls can make play feel awkward.

Stealth and puzzles
Ryan Nalley’s GameCritics review points to a mandatory stealth section with instant-fail consequences and puzzles that may be obscure enough to send some players looking for outside help. Those are specific complaints from that review, not a guarantee that every player will struggle in the same way. Read GameCritics’ review.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good fit: players who actively want fixed cameras, tank controls, survival-horror pacing, and the atmosphere of 1990s genre conventions.
- Potentially frustrating: players who dislike rigid controls, abrupt camera changes, obscure puzzle solutions, or stealth sections with severe failure penalties.
- For classic Resident Evil fans: the comparison is useful as shorthand for its broad retro approach, but it is not a promise that every mechanic or experience will match a particular Resident Evil game. Compare the control style, camera presentation, puzzle tolerance, and desired degree of friction.
Platforms and review scope
Nintendo Life’s review page lists Switch, PS4, and PS5, and its availability details also list PC, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series platforms. The PlayStation Store listing confirms PS4 and PS5 editions. Availability and prices vary by region and can change, so check the relevant store for the edition where you plan to play. The cited reviews do not establish that one platform performs better than another.

Verdict
Critics’ praise centers on atmosphere, enemy design, and the care with which Alisa: Developer’s Cut recreates retro survival horror. Its drawbacks are closely tied to that same design: camera disorientation, awkward combat, a punishing stealth passage, and puzzles that may not yield easily. Choose it for the committed throwback, not because you expect its controls to feel modern.
