Why Rockstar’s Reported Open-World Zombie Game Was Canceled

A former Rockstar North technical director says the early Scottish-island zombie-survival concept was dropped after about a month when the idea lost momentum.

Rockstar North’s reported open-world zombie-survival concept was dropped after roughly a month because, according to former technical director Obbe Vermeij, the idea felt depressing and quickly lost momentum. This account comes from Vermeij’s later recollection as reported by GameSpot—not a formal Rockstar announcement or evidence of a nearly finished game.

What was Rockstar’s reported zombie game?

Vermeij described an early concept for a survival game set on a windswept, foggy Scottish island. Players would face persistent zombie attacks and refuel vehicles to travel around. The idea reportedly lasted about a month before the team moved on to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. GameSpot’s 2023 report is the source for these details.

Some coverage uses “Z” or “Project Z” as a name, but the available account does not establish either as an official project title. “The reported zombie-survival concept” is more precise.

Why was it canceled?

As GameSpot reported Vermeij’s explanation, “The idea seemed depressing and quickly ran out of steam. Even the people who originally coined the idea lost faith.” That describes a concept losing support early, not Rockstar canceling a mature or nearly completed game. The account is a former developer’s retrospective recollection; no formal Rockstar statement about the concept is cited.

In a later interview report, Vermeij said he did not see the zombie idea or other experiments as missed opportunities. That is his retrospective view, rather than confirmation of the original internal deliberations. GamesRadar reported his later comments in 2026.

Was it the same game as Undead Nightmare?

No. The Scottish-island survival concept was separate from Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, Rockstar’s released zombie-themed expansion and standalone experience. Undead Nightmare put an outbreak into a world and cast of characters players already knew, rather than building the unfamiliar survival setting described by Vermeij.

In a 2010 interview, Rockstar creative vice president Dan Houser explained the premise: “With Undead Nightmare, we have long wanted to find a way to make zombies interesting, and one of the ways that we thought we could do that was by putting zombies into an existing universe, so the player gets to see how characters they already know respond to the madness of a zombie outbreak.” He also pointed to Red Dead’s shooting mechanics, Dead Eye, the plains setting, and John Marston as a better fit than Grand Theft Auto protagonists. Houser described the expansion as a standalone story outside the main game’s canon. GameSpot’s 2010 interview covers the design rationale.

What was released, and where can players find it?

Rockstar’s October 2010 announcement described a new single-player storyline and multiplayer content for Undead Nightmare. It also said a retail disc containing the expansion and other packs could be played without the base game. Those details describe the release at the time, not necessarily the editions currently sold. Rockstar’s original announcement provides the historical release information.
