Nightingale’s ammunition is organized by weapon family: rifles use rifle cartridges, pistols and revolvers use revolver cartridges, shotguns and blunderbusses use buckshot, bows use arrows, and launchers and slingbows use explosive marbles. Cartridge and marble families also have fire, poison, ice, and lightning variants; bows additionally have three distinct magick arrows. You craft ammunition at a Workbench, with some recipes tied to progression.

Ammo types and compatible weapons

Choose ammunition for the weapon you are carrying. The core families and their listed compatibility are:

Ammo family Types Compatible weapons
Rifle cartridges Standard; fire, poison, ice, and lightning Bolt-action and lever-action rifles
Revolver cartridges Standard; fire, poison, ice, and lightning Pistols and revolvers, including the Lancaster and Porter pistols listed by the reference
Buckshot cartridges Standard; fire, poison, ice, and lightning Shotguns and blunderbusses
Arrows Standard; Entangle, Implosion, and Slicing Shortbows and longbows
Explosive marbles Standard; fire, poison, ice, and lightning Launchers and slingbows

The ammo reference calls the shotgun family “Buckshot Cartridges.” Elemental versions are separate from standard ammunition, while the special magick arrows are their own arrow types.

What the special arrows do

  • Entangle arrows: ensnare their target.
  • Implosion arrows: described by the reference as a double shot.
  • Slicing arrows: fire horizontally across multiple creatures.

These are not elemental cartridges or marbles: they are special arrow variants for bows. For exact behavior and balance, check the item description in your current game version.

What elemental ammunition does

Fire and poison ammunition add damage over time. Ice applies a debuff that makes its target take more damage, while lightning applies one that reduces the target’s damage dealt. These effects are reported by the community-maintained Nightingale Wiki ammunition reference; exact numbers and stacking behavior can change with game balance updates.

The same reference reports a 10% damage bonus over the non-elemental counterpart for elemental ammunition, as well as a change from Missile damage to the corresponding elemental damage. Treat that bonus as a version-sensitive community-wiki mechanic, not a guaranteed value for every current build or item.

Where to craft ammo and unlock recipes

Ammunition is crafted at a Workbench. The Workbench progression reference lists Entangle, Implosion, and Slicing arrows, along with elemental slingbow, revolver, shotgun, and rifle ammunition, among recipes associated with tiered progression unlocks. This means recipe access is not necessarily available as soon as you obtain a weapon.

There is no single ingredient list or output quantity for all ammunition. Materials and yields vary by item, so consult the Workbench recipe in your game or the relevant item entry in the Nightingale Labs item index. The index lists 27 ammo items and includes names such as “Muckball” and “Simple Scattershot”; their presence in the index alone does not establish that they work like one of the core families above.

Choosing between ammunition

  • For a straightforward match: use the ammo family corresponding to your weapon—cartridge, buckshot, arrow, or explosive marble.
  • For a damage-over-time effect: consider fire or poison variants.
  • To make a target more vulnerable: consider ice ammunition.
  • To reduce a target’s damage output: consider lightning ammunition.
  • For a bow-specific utility effect: choose among Entangle, Implosion, and Slicing arrows based on their described behavior.

These are effect-based distinctions, not a tested damage ranking. The exact balance, recipes, and unlock requirements may differ by build. The community Nightingale Wiki lists its current live version as 0.8.2 (Early Access); that version label is third-party information and may no longer be current.
