Activision’s plan for smaller Call of Duty downloads centers on reorganizing game files, letting players choose which content to install, and streaming some high-quality textures rather than storing them all locally. Those changes give players more control, but Activision has not published comparable current size measurements showing how much smaller every game or platform is.
What Activision said it would change
In an August 2024 roadmap leading into the Black Ops 6 era, Activision said it was working toward smaller, more customizable downloads. The plan had three parts: reorganize game content, separate Warzone from annual-title downloads by default, and expand texture streaming. Activision’s roadmap described a large initial update to prepare for the reorganization, but said that update would not permanently add its full stated size to the Call of Duty storage footprint. It anticipated a decrease after the changes were in place.
The rollout was not identical across platforms: Activision said the PlayStation 5 update would arrive in four downloads, while other platforms would receive one. The roadmap also said players could choose whether to install Warzone alongside an annual title or download it separately. Older content that was no longer needed would not be removed automatically; players could uninstall it themselves.
That roadmap describes a transition, not a measured reduction that can be applied to every current Call of Duty game. Activision Support’s later instructions explain how to manage content, but do not give a before-and-after size comparison.

Manage installed content in Call of Duty
Activision’s support article, dated November 10, 2025, directs players to the game’s own file-management controls. Use this flow to see available content and install or remove what you want:
- Launch Call of Duty.
- Open Menu.
- Select Manage Files.
- Choose the content to install, uninstall, or manage.
Activision Support’s content-management guide recommends managing files inside Call of Duty because platform-level content controls may expose or handle files differently. Removing a mode or title you no longer play is a direct way to reduce the content stored locally.

Texture streaming: less local storage, more bandwidth
Activision says expanded On-Demand High-Quality Streaming can place less-frequently used content in a streaming cache instead of requiring it to be stored directly on the device. The two settings trade image quality against internet bandwidth:

Streaming can reduce the amount of content held directly on a device, but it shifts some demand to your connection. The best choice depends on whether you prioritize visual fidelity or lower bandwidth use. Activision’s support guide describes these settings; it does not quantify the storage savings for a particular game, platform, or setting.

Check the requirement for your specific game and platform
Call of Duty storage needs vary by title, platform, and selected content, so use the requirement for the release you plan to install rather than assuming one number applies to the series. As one current, narrowly scoped example, Activision’s September 29, 2026 PC information for Modern Warfare 4 lists 115 GB of storage space and an SSD requirement. That is a PC requirement for that title, not a general Call of Duty download size or a console requirement. See Activision’s Modern Warfare 4 PC information.
A storage requirement is not necessarily the same as the download size: installation needs space on the drive, while the downloaded files may differ. Check the platform’s current listing and the in-game content manager for the components you intend to install.
