It preserves the original game’s isometric presentation and second-edition AD&D rules rather than remaking them for modern tastes. The 2013 edition adds the expansion campaign, new characters, bug fixes and widescreen support, but the old-school systems remain part of the experience.
Is Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition worth playing?
Yes, for players who enjoy building a party, exploring a large fantasy campaign and making decisions that shape their journey. The game’s appeal rests on its story and companion cast as much as on combat: battles reward planning, while the setting and quests give the campaign room to surprise you.
It is a less natural fit if you expect action combat or a modernized ruleset. Encounters unfold in real time, but you can pause to issue orders; understanding the party’s abilities and the game’s AD&D mechanics matters more than quick reflexes. Steam’s product description identifies the game as an isometric RPG using second-edition AD&D rules and real-time-with-pause combat. Steam store listing

These are changing user-review aggregates, not critic scores. Separately, PC Gamer ranked the underlying Baldur’s Gate 2 at number 14 in its 2025 Top 100 PC Games list; that retrospective ranking is not a review score for this edition. PC Gamer’s 2025 ranking

Is it the same game as the original?
The Enhanced Edition is based on the original Baldur’s Gate II, released in 2000, but it is not identical to that launch version. Its campaign foundation remains Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal; the four added party members, their quests, The Black Pits II and the listed technical improvements belong to the Enhanced Edition. The original release date should not be confused with the Enhanced Edition’s November 15, 2013 release date.
Is Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition multiplayer?
Yes, on supported versions: Steam lists single-player and co-op, including cross-platform multiplayer as a feature. However, Beamdog specifically says multiplayer is unavailable on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions. If playing with a friend is essential, confirm that the platform you choose supports multiplayer rather than assuming the feature applies everywhere. Beamdog’s platform information

What platforms can you play it on?
Beamdog lists versions for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, as well as PC, Mac, iOS and Android distribution. The most useful practical distinctions established for choosing between versions are the console multiplayer restriction and the way companion content is bundled: Beamdog says the four new characters are included on PC and Mac, and offered as DLC on mobile. The available information does not establish comparative control comfort, performance or readability across devices, so those are worth checking for your specific setup.
For PC and Mac players, PC Gamer reported in June 2026 that patch 2.7 added Steam cloud saves controlled through Steam client settings, working GOG Galaxy cloud saves, and native Apple Silicon support. That report describes the update; rollout and cloud-save behavior may depend on the storefront and platform. PC Gamer’s patch 2.7 report

Verdict
Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition is a strong way to play a landmark party-based RPG when you are comfortable with its deliberate pace and older rules. Its additions make the package broader and more convenient, but they do not transform its combat or underlying design into a modern remake. Choose your platform with care if co-op is part of the plan: the listed console versions do not support multiplayer.
