This review covers the original Angels of Death video game—not its anime or manga adaptations. The four-episode, single-player horror adventure is built around Ray and Zack’s attempt to escape a sealed building, with their uneasy relationship and the story carrying much of its appeal. Steam players rate it highly, though reactions to its presentation and horror impact are less uniform.
What is the Angels of Death game?
Angels of Death is a psychological horror-adventure game created by Makoto Sanada and published by Vaka Game Magazine. It released on Steam on December 19, 2016, as four episodes. The original Japanese version was freeware; the Steam release supports the developers. The official Steam description calls it “a psychological horror-adventure game from the creator of Forest of Drizzling Rain (“Kirisame ga furu mori”).”
Ray wakes in a concrete room with no memory of how she got there. As she searches for an exit, she meets Zack, a man carrying a scythe. The two try to escape a sealed building, moving through floors shaped by their inhabitants and threats. The official description puts their relationship and a dark promise at the center of the escape mission. Steam’s game listing describes shooting and escape missions; its genres include adventure, indie, and RPG, with tags such as psychological horror, puzzle, 2D, and story-rich.
Is Angels of Death worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal to players who want a compact, plot-led horror adventure and are interested in Ray and Zack’s dynamic. The story and characters are the clearest strengths indicated by the official description and published review reactions. The game may be a weaker fit if you expect especially polished visuals, a prominent soundtrack, or consistently intense scares: those are among the areas where reviewers have expressed reservations.

There is no single review score that settles the question. At access on October 7, 2026, Steam showed 95% positive from 1,189 English-language user reviews and labeled the reception “Overwhelmingly Positive.” This is a snapshot of Steam’s English review pool, not a critic score or a permanent rating. Metacritic’s page showed a 7.5 user score from 11 ratings, split into 55% positive, 36% mixed, and 9% negative. Its critic panel also contained a limited sample, with reactions ranging from praise for the plot and characters to criticism of the simple RPG Maker visuals, soundtrack, or horror impact. These samples differ in size and population, so they should not be combined or treated as equivalent measures.
What is the horror and gameplay like?
The game mixes story-driven exploration and escape with puzzle and shooting elements. Its setting and serial-killer threats provide the horror frame, while the official description emphasizes the characters’ attempt to get out rather than presenting the game simply as a sequence of scares. The available review reactions suggest that atmosphere and horror intensity are subjective: a player drawn in by the story may find the experience effective even if its visuals or scares do not land as strongly for everyone.

How does the game differ from the anime or manga?
Angels of Death also has anime, comic, and novel versions, as confirmed by publisher announcements. This article assesses the game only; it does not establish how the adaptations compare scene by scene or which version is better. If you have watched the anime, consider the game as a separate, interactive take on the escape story: it includes escape, puzzle, and shooting sections, not just the narrative.

To compare versions fairly, look at how each handles Ray and Zack’s relationship and character development, how strongly it builds atmosphere, its visual and sound presentation, and how much of the escape is interactive. A review of one format is not a substitute for a review of another.

The Steam listing names English, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese interface and subtitle support; its language table does not indicate full audio support for those languages. Its legacy minimum-requirements section lists Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7/8, while the same page notes that the Steam Client has supported Windows 10 and later since January 1, 2024. Those are different statements: the legacy game requirements should not be taken as confirmation of current compatibility. Check the current store listing and your system details before buying.
