No universal finding shows that PS5 Pro has “no real FPS gains.” The claim needs a named game and a comparable test: frame rate can vary by title, patch, graphics mode and display conditions. Available coverage includes both pre-release video analysis and a later multi-game review, but neither establishes one result for every PS5 Pro game.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
A May 10, 2026 article whose title closely matches this claim is a general guide to benchmarking, not a test of PS5 Pro performance in a named game. It discusses how to compare modes and interpret average FPS and frame-time behavior, but it does not demonstrate that the console has no gains. Position Is Everything’s benchmarking guide

A separate All Tech Nerd article, updated September 21, 2024, summarizes Digital Foundry’s analysis of Sony-provided videos before the outlet had early access to the console. The article reports concerns that the demonstrated modes relied on PSSR and might not deliver significant FPS gains. That is a secondary account of pre-release video analysis—not a controlled, hands-on PS5-versus-PS5-Pro benchmark. All Tech Nerd’s summary
Digital Foundry’s PS5 Pro review, published November 6, 2024, is a different kind of evidence: it describes impressions and testing across multiple games and discusses Game Boost, ray tracing and PSSR. A multi-game review cannot be reduced to a universal claim that no title benefits. Digital Foundry’s PS5 Pro review
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
Why “real gains” needs a precise definition
Frame rate is only one possible measure of a graphics upgrade. A game can look sharper or use more detailed effects without running at a higher FPS. Conversely, a performance change might show up as steadier frame times or fewer drops rather than a higher average. Resolution, reconstruction quality, ray tracing, average FPS and frame-time stability are distinct outcomes; a comparison should say which one it measures.
PSSR can improve the image without increasing FPS
Sony’s March 16, 2026 announcement about an upgraded version of PSSR describes improved image stability and fine-detail clarity, along with more flexibility for developers balancing performance and fidelity in selected games. Those are not promises of higher frame rates in every supported game. Sony’s PSSR announcement
Support and implementation vary by game
“PS5 Pro Enhanced” does not mean every game receives the same change—or a measurable FPS increase. Developers decide how to use available features and modes, and Sony’s launch-period description limits ray-tracing and high-frame-rate gameplay features to selected PS5 games enhanced for PS5 Pro. What a useful PS5-versus-PS5-Pro test should include
To assess whether a particular game has a meaningful FPS gain, compare like with like rather than transferring one title’s result to the whole library.
- Game and build: Name the title and version or patch tested on each console.
- Graphics mode: Match the resolution or performance mode, and identify any different options available on one console.
- Repeatable test sequence: Use the same area, route and actions so that the comparison is not distorted by different gameplay.
- Frame-rate evidence: Report average FPS alongside frame-time behavior, including drops or instability where measured.
- Image and display conditions: Describe relevant image-quality differences and disclose display or VRR assumptions.
Without these details, a conclusion such as “no real gains” is difficult to verify. If the modes or test conditions do not match, the result should not be presented as proof that the console itself caused the difference.
What Sony’s Gran Turismo 7 example means
In its September 25, 2024 games overview, Sony described an optional experimental 8K/60fps mode planned for Gran Turismo 7. That is Sony’s launch-period feature description, not an independently measured benchmark or a claim about every PS5 Pro game. Sony’s PS5 Pro games overview
