Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition launched on January 15, 2026. It is an enhanced edition of the existing game—not a new mainline Animal Crossing game—and the free version 3.0 update also brought new content to the original Switch release.
What came to Switch 2?
Nintendo released Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition on January 15, 2026. The “early 2026” release window has passed: the edition is available, and it adds Switch 2-specific features to New Horizons. It is not a separately announced new Animal Crossing game. Nintendo’s product page says the edition is playable only on Nintendo Switch 2.
What is new in the Switch 2 Edition?
The main additions are visual, control, communication, camera, and online features. Their availability depends on your hardware and, for online play, Nintendo’s membership and account conditions.
- Higher resolution: Enhanced visuals support up to 4K in TV mode. A compatible display is required to view 4K.
- Mouse controls: Joy-Con 2 controllers can be used as a mouse for supported in-game actions.
- Megaphone: Use the console’s built-in microphone to call for island residents in-game.
- CameraPlay: Connect a compatible USB camera to bring players’ faces into the game. The camera is sold separately and is optional.
- Larger online sessions: The Switch 2 Edition supports online play for up to 12 players when all participants use that edition. Nintendo Switch Online and applicable account conditions apply.
These additions belong to the Switch 2 Edition; the free update for both Switch versions is separate.

What does the free update add to the original Switch game?
Nintendo also released a free content update for both the Switch and Switch 2 versions. That means existing players on the original Switch can access the new update content without buying the Switch 2 Edition.

Nintendo Support lists version 3.0.0 as released January 14, 2026, and version 3.0.3 as released April 29, 2026. The support page’s update history establishes those releases; it does not establish whether a later version has appeared since.

Do existing owners have to buy the game again?
No. If you already own the Switch version, Nintendo announced a digital Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack for owners who want the edition’s Switch 2 features. It requires the full game and is not a standalone copy. New players can buy the Switch 2 Edition as a full game.

What should you check before buying?
- Console: The Switch 2 Edition and its added features require Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
- Existing ownership: If you already own the Switch game, the upgrade pack is the relevant route; it does not replace the base game.
- CameraPlay: You need a compatible USB camera, sold separately, only if you want to use this optional feature.
