Apex Legends Season 28: Breach launched on February 10, 2026, after EA published its version 28.0 patch notes on February 9. Its defining addition was Hardlight Mesh, destructible window barriers that create new routes through buildings and let Controller Legends restore or reinforce defenses. The launch update also reworked Fuse, adjusted Catalyst and Bloodhound, and shifted weapon balance toward shotguns and close-range fights. These are launch-era notes, not a description of the current live game.
What changed in the Breach launch update?
Respawn’s main design change was to make fortified positions more interactive: players could break through Hardlight Mesh rather than treating every window as a fixed boundary. The balance changes supported a broader close-combat direction, with marksman adjustments alongside shotgun improvements. EA’s overview also listed a Ranked format change, Bot Royale Evolved updates, and more detailed dialogue controls.

Respawn described its goal as keeping “the entire meta pool of Legends and weapons that players coalesce around” dynamic and exciting to play. The changes below reflect that stated design direction and the state of version 28.0 at launch.
How Hardlight Mesh worked
Hardlight Mesh appeared in windows on Broken Moon, World’s Edge, E-District, and Firing Range. While intact, a panel blocked projectiles and Legend movement; destroying it opened a route through the window. Controller Legends could rebuild or reinforce the panels, making the mechanic useful to attackers looking for an entry and defenders trying to restore a hold.

EA’s Spanish-locale version of the official patch notes gives the following Season 28 launch values. They are historical version 28.0 figures, not current-game specifications.

The notes say Hardlight could take damage from weapons, explosives, melee attacks, and Legend abilities. The multipliers mean the damage source mattered: explosives and Legend abilities were especially effective, while shotguns and sniper weapons also had their own listed modifiers.

Legend balance changes
Fuse rework
Respawn said Fuse was popular in lower tiers but struggled at higher ranks, where his ultimate was difficult to use reliably. The rework changed The Motherlode into a mortar that damages on impact and releases smaller explosive waves. Its breach mode could pierce cover. Fuse’s tactical was made faster and more precise, and explosive damage no longer slowed him.
Catalyst updates
Catalyst’s tactical became larger and quicker to activate, and she gained an additional trap. Her ultimate could be deployed horizontally, giving players another way to place the barrier to shape a fight.

Bloodhound updates
Bloodhound received a shorter ultimate cooldown and a shorter activation time. Knocks extended the ultimate’s duration, the tactical scan lasted longer, and Flock moved into Bloodhound’s base kit.
Weapon changes: less marksman pressure, stronger shotguns
Respawn framed the weapon balance direction as a move toward closer engagements. Its Designer’s Notes highlighted marksman reductions and shotgun improvements; the listed examples below are version 28.0 launch changes, not assurances about later patches.

The trade-off was a deliberate emphasis on range: reducing marksman strength while improving shotguns encouraged teams to contest space at closer distances, with Hardlight openings offering another way to force those encounters.
Ranked, Bot Royale, audio, and anniversary period
- Ranked: Dropship starts returned in place of controlled drop zones.
- Bot Royale Evolved: Lobbies could include one to five human squads alongside updated bots. XP and challenge progression were enabled, while badges and stats remained restricted.
- Audio controls: Players gained separate, more granular settings for Legend Dialogue, Ping Dialogue, and Announcer Dialogue.
- Anniversary rewards: The rewards period ran from February 10 through March 10, 2026.
What the launch data can—and cannot—tell you
Respawn’s pre-season Designer’s Notes included a chart covering January 19–25, 2026. Its approximate visual readings showed Octane at about a 14% pick rate and Catalyst and Seer at around four percentage points below the chart’s encounter-win-rate baseline. Those are readings from that dated chart, not season-wide or current performance measurements.

The later March 23, 2026 Breach midseason Designer’s Notes reported that the top ten team compositions represented 25% of Ranked squads during a late-2025 peak for Sparrow and Ash, compared with roughly 20% in comparison periods. That retrospective figure concerns a specific earlier peak; it should not be read as a measure of Season 28 launch composition diversity.
Why these are launch notes, not current patch notes
Season 28 began on February 10, 2026, but later midseason updates and subsequent seasons changed the live-game balance.
