It pairs the subclass’s throwing and forced-movement identity with a small Fighter dip, but it is a published build option—not a proven best choice for every difficulty, party, or play style.
What Path of the Giant is built to do
Path of the Giant is an official Barbarian subclass added in Patch 8. Larian says it becomes available at Barbarian level 3 and draws on giant strength and size. Its distinctive play is about hurling weapons, using size and strength, and displacing enemies—especially when the battlefield has ledges or other hazards.
The subclass’s signature features in Baldur’s Gate 3 are Giant’s Rage, Elemental Cleaver, Boot of the Giants, and Mighty Impel. Elemental Cleaver supports the throwing plan by imbuing a weapon with elemental damage and returning it; Larian’s Patch 8 example is a hammer with shocking damage. Mighty Impel and Boot of the Giants add further movement and kick interactions. These are the game’s implemented features, so tabletop versions of the subclass should not be treated as a substitute for BG3 mechanics.
Larian describes the subclass in Community Update #34 as a choice for characters who want to use giant strength and size, including kicking enemies from ledges or throwing a companion. The Patch 8 announcement also illustrates Elemental Cleaver with a returning, shock-infused hammer.

Recommended level-12 split: Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2
PC Gamer’s Patch 8 build coverage, dated 3 September 2026, recommends Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2 as a level-12 option. The core idea is to spend most of the character’s levels on the subclass while taking two Fighter levels. The available coverage does not establish that this split beats continuing Barbarian for every party or difficulty, and it does not provide a controlled damage comparison.
Why the build leans into throws
Throws make the subclass’s features central to the character rather than occasional tricks. Elemental Cleaver broadens the elemental throwing option, while Mighty Impel and Boot of the Giants give the build ways to interact with enemy positioning. Look for opportunities to exploit terrain and force movement, but do not assume every encounter has a useful ledge or that forced movement will always be the best action.

Feat and gear starting points
PC Gamer’s published proposal names Tavern Brawler and throwing-focused equipment such as the Returning Pike and Ring of Flinging. Treat these as suggested components of that editorial build, not guaranteed best-in-slot choices or promises of a particular result. Item availability depends on where you are in the game, and patch behavior can affect how a build performs.
When to choose this build—and when to adjust it
- Choose the throw-focused plan if you want a Barbarian whose weapons, elemental effects, and positioning tools define combat.
- Value the Fighter dip if you want to follow the published level-12 option; the sources here do not establish a universal advantage over taking more Barbarian levels.
- Favor environmental play if you enjoy moving enemies and using hazards. If you mainly want straightforward melee combat, the throw-focused recommendation may not match your preferred style.
- Check your current run before committing to exact gear or assumptions about performance: progression, item access, difficulty, party composition, and patch behavior all matter.
How strong is it compared with other builds?
The available sources support Giant Barbarian 10 / Fighter 2 as a published option, not an objectively strongest build. They do not provide controlled damage-per-round figures or a consistent comparison against a melee-focused Giant Barbarian or a different level split. Choose it for its throw-and-forced-movement identity rather than an unsupported promise of top damage.
