What is Aqua-Sac?
Aqua-Sac S.O.S. is a heavy-duty jute outer sack containing an inner liner and absorbent polymer. The manufacturer describes it as an alternative to conventional sandbags. Its intended role is to help create a temporary water barrier or redirect water; suitability depends on the location and flood conditions.
AET Flood Defence says to submerge the bag in water: it absorbs up to 13 litres in roughly five minutes. That is a manufacturer specification, not an independently verified measure of flood protection. See AET’s Aqua-Sac product information.
How large and heavy is it?
The I.C. Brindle & Co Ltd technical data sheet, version V01-0319 (2019), lists a supplied dry bag at 60 × 37 cm and 0.4 kg. It gives the expanded bag as approximately 54 × 31 cm and 10.5 cm high, weighing about 13 kg. The sheet says soaking for three to five minutes expands it to more than 30 times its original size. These are product-sheet specifications, not independent test results. The technical data sheet contains those figures.

UK Government guidance lists an Aqua-Sac self-inflating bag at 0.54 m long and 0.1 m installed height. Those rounded dimensions are consistent with the product-sheet figures, but guidance dimensions do not establish how well a bag performs at a particular property. How does it compare with a sandbag?

These differences can help with handling and preparation decisions, but do not show that either type is more effective in every flood setting. Site conditions, water depth and flow, and correct placement matter; do not treat a self-inflating bag as suitable for every location or flood severity.

Can Aqua-Sac be reused?
AET says an uncontaminated bag begins to dry over six to eight weeks and may be re-inflated as it dries. A separate AET data sheet says to inflate the bag in fresh water only, while stating it can be used in tidal waters for flood protection. Follow the latest product instructions for the specific use and condition of the bag; do not assume a bag exposed to contaminated floodwater is suitable for reuse. The older Aqua-Sac data sheet contains the fresh-water qualification.

- Match the product to the site. Decide whether the aim is to form a temporary barrier or divert water, and consult relevant local flood guidance for the property and expected conditions.
- Check deployment requirements. The product needs water to expand, and inflated bags weigh about 13 kg each according to the 2019 technical sheet. Consider how they will be wetted, moved, and positioned.
- Read current instructions. Confirm water type, placement, reuse, and care requirements in current manufacturer documentation before relying on the product.
- Confirm availability and disposal guidance. AET sells Aqua-Sac S.O.S. bags through its product page; price and stock can change. For disposal, check current local waste rules and manufacturer guidance rather than relying on older environmental statements.
The available product specifications and government guidance do not establish how much flood damage Aqua-Sac prevents or provide an independent comparison with sandbags. Treat the stated absorption and dimensions as product information, not a guaranteed outcome at a given site.
