Athenian Rhapsody is a comedic RPG built around a choice that changes how its turn-based battles feel: attack enemies, or try to befriend them. Its appeal rests on oddball humor, character interactions, and real-time dodging and minigames—not on a conventional fantasy adventure. It is worth a look if that combination sounds fun; players who dislike repeated jokes or want a tightly structured story may be less taken with it.
What kind of game is Athenian Rhapsody?
Developed by Nico Papalia and published by Top Hat Studios, Athenian Rhapsody is a single-player comedic RPG set in a world called Athens. Steam lists its release date as May 14, 2024, and classifies it as Adventure, Indie, and RPG. The store listing describes puzzles, secrets, multiple battle minigames, and a possible party of 16 characters. Steam’s game page also lists English interface support, achievements, trading cards, cloud saves, and family sharing.
The premise is less important than the game’s tone and systems: expect surreal dialogue, strange characters, and battles that ask you to do more than choose an attack from a menu.
How does combat work, and can you befriend enemies?
Yes. Each encounter offers a choice between attacking an opponent and interacting with it in an attempt to make it a friend. Steam lists options such as pick-up lines, mean jokes, and memory games. In Pocket Gamer’s description, successful friendship interactions fill a meter until the opponent becomes a friend.

Combat remains turn-based, but enemy turns include real-time dodging. The player moves inside a dodge box while avoiding attacks that vary by opponent. Attacking also involves a timing gauge, according to Pocket Gamer. The result is a mix of RPG decisions and brief action challenges rather than purely menu-driven turns.
Pocket Gamer reviewer Jack Brassell described the combat as “easy to learn but hard to master,” praising its varied dodging patterns. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a guarantee that every player will find the challenge equally engaging.
What makes its story and replay structure different?
The game records choices and events from a playthrough into a “Rhapsody.” Steam describes these records as something players can share and combine with friends; Pocket Gamer characterizes them as tickets representing a playthrough. These features are part of the game’s described design, but the available sources do not establish the current status of its online sharing services or timed events.

That structure gives choices a social and replay-oriented framing: a run is not only a route through the game, but a record of what happened in it. The publisher’s description also advertises a large potential party and secrets to find. Whether that adds meaningful replay value will depend on how much you enjoy revisiting odd encounters and comparing choices.

What do reviews say about the humor and routes?
Pocket Gamer’s May 31, 2024 review awarded the game four-and-a-half stars on its page, highlighting its strange dialogue, absurd puzzles, unusual characters, enemy-befriending option, and varied dodging patterns. This is a favorable individual review rather than a broad critic consensus.
Metacritic’s page listed one critic review and said a Metascore would be available after four critic reviews. It included a positive Digital Chumps review dated May 14, 2024, while noting praise for absurdist humor and player agency alongside reservations about story construction and the Rhapsody system’s implementation. With only one critic review listed, there is no representative aggregate critic score to cite.

Individual Steam community reviews raise useful questions but should not be mistaken for evidence of what most players think. One highly rated post favors the befriending route for its variety and balance; another praises the characters and humor but finds the toilet jokes too frequent. A separate user review criticizes repetitive forced dialogue in boss fights and the combat balance when attacking every enemy. These reactions suggest that route preference, tolerance for recurring jokes, and patience with repeated dialogue can shape the experience.
Is Athenian Rhapsody like Undertale?
The comparison is understandable at the level of reader expectations: both descriptions point toward RPG battles where the player can engage enemies without simply defeating them, and where humor and character interactions matter. But the sources here do not establish a direct design comparison or controlled evaluation against Undertale. Treat the resemblance as a way to describe the kind of choice you might enjoy, not as a claim that the games play identically.

Pocket Gamer’s review header identifies iOS, Android, and Steam. Steam lists the digital game and a downloadable “Athenian Rhapsody – Artbook + Manual” add-on. That is not evidence of a printed book or physical retail edition.
How should you read the player-review score?
