If you mean replacing the original covers rather than covering them, the job involves opening the controller. iFixit’s guide applies specifically to model CUH-ZCT1U: it involves opening the case, handling the cable and battery, removing the motherboard, then pulling off the old covers and fitting new ones. Concave or domed
Concave caps cup the thumb and can feel more locked in. Convex or domed caps give the thumb more freedom to move. Standard or raised
A taller cap changes the feel of stick movement and is marketed as an option for finer aiming. It is not a guaranteed performance improvement. Android Central’s 2021 guide identifies the Inferno as adding 9.9 mm of height; that is the guide’s product specification, not an independent measurement or proof of better aim. Will thumbstick grip caps fit over the original DualShock 4 sticks?
Standard DualShock 4 over-caps are designed to push onto the existing stick tops, so the original rubber does not need to be removed. Check the selected product listing for its exact fit. This is different from a full controller sleeve, which fits over the controller body, adds thickness and is shaped for DS4 rather than DualSense controllers. Can a grip cap fix worn sticks or analog drift?
A cap can cover a worn or slippery stick surface; it does not repair analog-stick drift. Nerd Techy distinguishes cap wear from the control-box repair needed to address drift. - Identify the problem: choose an over-cap for surface grip, comfort or coverage of worn tops. If the issue is drift, look into controller repair instead.
