ARC Raiders moved from a free-to-play plan to an upfront paid release because Embark wanted more freedom to make the game’s systems respect players’ time, design director Virgil Watkins said. He pointed to removing crafting timers, making collection quantities more rational, and bringing effort and reward into closer alignment. Watkins also acknowledged that charging for the game left Embark with a different challenge: finding monetization that did not feel predatory.
Why did Embark move away from free-to-play?
Watkins described free-to-play as creating pressure to make some actions “a little stickier” so players would keep playing and, ideally, spend. In a GamesRadar+ report on his comments, he said that pressure made it harder to respect players’ time.
That is Embark’s stated design rationale, not proof that a paid business model automatically produces a better player experience. Watkins was describing the incentives the team felt under its earlier direction and the latitude it gained after dropping free-to-play.
What did the change mean for crafting and progression?
Watkins gave three examples of the design changes the decision made easier:
#1 Best Overall
- ARC Raiders Deluxe Edition includes the base game and the following content: The Wanderer Set, including the following cosmetic items: “Valente” Outfit" “Pathfinder” Backpack,“Blanket Roll” Backpack Attachment.
- Plus: Character Cosmetic, Finger Gun Rapid Fire Emote, Cowboy Scrappy Body Type and Skin, 2 400 Raider Tokens.
- Crafting: He said crafting no longer had timers players had to wait out.
- Collection requirements: He said the amounts players were asked to collect could be more rational.
- Effort and outcome: He said the team could bring the time and work required into closer alignment with the result.
These are specific examples, not a claim that ARC Raiders has no grind or that every system changed. Watkins characterized the shift as helping the team make activities take an amount of time that felt appropriate.
What does paid entry change—and what does it not solve?
| Design question | Free-to-play direction, as Watkins described it | Upfront paid direction |
|---|---|---|
| How players enter | Free to start, with continued engagement and potential spending part of the model. | Players pay to access the game. |
| Pressure on play patterns | Watkins said actions could need to be “stickier” to encourage players to stay and potentially spend. | He said Embark had more freedom to set timers, collection quantities, and effort-to-outcome balance according to what felt appropriate. |
| Monetization challenge | Encouraging ongoing play and spending was part of the incentive he described. | Embark still needed monetization that did not feel predatory, Watkins said. |
Paying upfront does not remove the need for a sustainable business model. Watkins explicitly described non-predatory monetization as an ongoing challenge for Embark after the decision.

When did ARC Raiders launch, and what did it cost?
Embark’s June 6, 2025 Steam announcement said ARC Raiders would launch on October 30, 2025 for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and GeForce Now cloud streaming. The announcement does not name a physical edition.
In a GamesBeat interview published December 30, 2025, Embark CEO Patrick Söderlund said the team set the price at $40 after choosing a traditional paid model, and compared its positioning with Helldivers 2. That is a launch-era account, not confirmation of the current price in every country or store.
